Confused....fuel gauge!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lardy, Aug 20, 2014.

  1. Ok so been wondering why my fuel gauge isn't reading anymore and when fiddling about with the broken wires on the horn it flickered! Since fixing the new horn switch in the dash the fuel gauge still isn't working but this evening when I put the lights on, the gauge needle flickered!!
I've checked the Bentley and Haynes manual but can't see how the light sitch is earthed other than through the bulbs. I'm thinking could be an earth dash end, any ideas?

  2. There are some earth lugs off the clocks at the back, they are slide on over lug type. I had an issue with full beam not working reliably, traced it to the lugs at the back. Needs the clocks out to sort.

  3. Check the dash earth and also make sure the vibrator is earthing nicely on the back of the clocks....

  5. phnar phnar!!...

  6. Haha!!
Rite, I've checked the dash earth, all is good, I've an early gauge I think without the extra bit on the back, it's power in from dash pod supply and earth out to the sender.
    Power going in, check.
Earth side when checked with multimeter, continuity to another earth so should be fine I wouldve thought???

  7. is there a fault with the gauge? i.e. is there a voltage out from the unit as well as supply and do you have a resistance measurment across it or does it have a break in the wire...?

  8. Snapped the feed wire from the gauge grrrrrrr! Took it all apart and repaired. I can't work it out at the moment and I think best thing to do is wait til I've got the engine out and check everything together. Atleast that way I can identify faulty parts or wiring AND put in a hatch to get to the sender from inside the bus at a later date if need be.

  9. Had loads of grief with ours recently check out fuel gauge problem last month had loads of advice, mine was damaged cable on sender. Have you looked closely at needle on gauge as mine had come adrift where springs meet which only saw when out of dash

  11. As previous check earthing.
Check thread see if that helps

Testing with a multimeter should produce a reading between 10 to 70 ohms I found dispite what has been written the graph is pretty linear where 40ohms ( halfway between 10 and 70 ) corresponds to half a tank
