Compression tester - what you got ??

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lasty, Jul 7, 2020.

  1. I`ve been trying to find a suitable compression tester for the van (1600) .
After buying and returning a boggo CLARKE one i know the criteria of what will work and what won`t .
Most i`ve seen have a short brass adaptor crimped on to flexi pipe meaning you can just about wiggle the threaded end into the head threads and get it to engage . Once threaded into the head it can`t be tightened because the flexi is in the way - if that makes any sense ??
If the brass adapter could be removed , tightened into the head and stuck out enough to screw in the flexi that`d be just dandy but i can`t seem to find anything suitable ...

My question being , what testers are folks using then ??
Any links to something that actually fits much appreciated

Whatever the local car spares place had.
No adapter on mine for our size. It's mostly flexi with a short brass bit. The one I had previously had a much longer brass part.

I don't understand your problem, how about a link to what you have, there are a few different clarke ones.

It doesn't have to be all that tight, I just spin the whole thing. The o-ring will seal it. You are somewhat dependant on the tightness of the crimp, but it doesn't need to be as tight as a plug.

  4. I know what you mean. If the adaptor is long enough, just have to wrestle it in and tighten it by rotating the whole thing. As @zedders said, doesn't have to be super tight.

I managed to find an old Sykes Pickavant job on fleaBay with a selection of adaptors, which makes it a lot easier. Screw the adaptor in, then attach the gauge.

  5. This is the one i bought Steve :-

You`ll see the difference straight away , the one i bought had a very short brass section which gets `lost` as you`re trying to get it started into the head .
Interesting what you say about tightening - i must start reading the little book of instructions when i use stuff ...

  6. Have you tried using the push-it-in wand thing?

I bought the same, but thinking about it, I used it while the engine was on the stand, so much easier.

  7. Not interested in using the wand , i`ve used them before (MGB ??) which was fine as there`s good access and with the engine out either method would be fine but it`s awkward with the tins on ..

I think that one Steve linked is the Gunson one - i`ll have a looksee :D

I think that's how they commonly used to be. When I first went to a rolling road the old boy compression tested with a thing like that before he started.

I must have managed with the longer one and type-1 manifolds but TBH the shorter one seems easier even down the deep type-4 tin.

I’ve got a Gunsons 20 quid one. Had it years. Works a treat. I’ve always just tightened it by hand via the gauge head.

Normally use it at work on modern 16 valve engines where the plugs are very deep in the head so you can’t get at the brass end

  12. I did have a very quick look at the wand but the one supplied in that specific kit is far too long and very difficult to get any kind of downward force to push the `bung` into the head , especially at the flywheel end behind the manifolds . A different angled bung would be the way forwards i f i was going to give this method a go , still want tofind a longer brass inert to be honest ..

I’ve used mine on my bus before. Which means it must be easy! Do you want to borrow it Chris? You’re only up the road.

Did mine yesterday used the flexi hose as a flexi drive to screw it in. It has an O ring on the brass bit to seal the thread.
Thats a 1985 Halfords Equus branded one. Went with my N reg rot box 10 year old Morris Marina
