compression help

  1. Just put new rings and cylinders on and went to check the compression. Left side both at about 120. Right side is between 90 and 95, not exactly what I was expecting.

Any thoughts of what's wrong or what I should check?

Check your tappets are set correctly. And re test.

  3. Checked tappets and they seem fine.

  4. Did you do a compression test before you stripped it down?

  5. Yes the compression was low on the left side, needed new rings. But now compression is low on both barrels on the right.

Checked tappets again, I think set them up on the wrong stroke. Fingers crossed that'll fix it.

What sort of compression should it be giving and will it increase as it beds in?

  6. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Things I would have done (apart from replacing the big end bearings, but I won't go on!)
Re-lapped and inspected the inlet valves.
Replaced the exhaust valves lapping in the new ones.
Wait 10 mins after torqueing the heads and torque again.
Rings need bedding in. It's commonly accepted nowadays that you get one chance to do this when the engine is first run and the way to do it is get into second or third gear, accelerate hard, deccelerate hard (no brakes), repeat a few times. That's it.
