Completly rusty screws and bolts that I cant move!!

  1. Hi

Because I no good with engines I bought a old 1600 aircooled engine from the local car breakers. I want to learn to take it apart and put it back together again my first problem Ive come across is that some of the tin wear bolts are rusted solid, and when I've tried to force it the screw head starts to strip.

    The things I've tried:

    1.Force
    2.Penetration spray
    3. Heat then penetration spray
    4. Swearing and hitting it with a hammer.

Now I'm out of ideas so I come begging for advice

    Cheers

Drill them out and rethread if the tinware is savageable.

  3. On tin wear ones if youn cant budge surely just grind head off drill out if necessary and fit new ones?? Take each one as it comes and use correct tools and three shredded wheat helps with some. Heat and tap normally works to brake the seal??? You are lucky you can experiment with this one ;)

  4. When I took my 1700 motor apart this winter for it's rebuild, I had great luck with using my Dewalt hammer drill. After having a few set backs like yours, I found the hammer drill was able to brake them free before they started to strip. May work for you!

The ones that I had stripped, I cut a new groove in them with a steel cutting wheel on my hand grinder and retried them with the hammer drill. I managed to get them all out.

  5. When you say penetration spray, do you mean actual pentrating fluid? WD40 is commonly used but is not pentrating oil, rather a water displacing lubricant. Proper pentrating fluid is much more effective.

  6. Soak em in plusgas overnight them wind out with mole grips

  7. If you can get on them a decent set of mole grips =]

    PlusGas is your friend!

Molegrips - they'll either undo or shear.

  11. you need an impact screwdriver:

place a big hammer on the bottom so you don't bend the tin. Does wonders on those screws

  12. Yepp,,that very tool sorted all my rusted tin bolts

  13. Cheers for the advice, I've used most of the ideas to get them out. One thing I have learnt is that peneration spray is really flammable!!

Next task is removing the rusty cyclinder head, I've undone all the nuts but I think its just rust holding it together.

  14. i've a feeling this will be a really long thread
