Complete new wiring loom or just repair faulty part?

  1. Hi All, any help/advice please?
Has anyone replaced the full wiring loom? How easy is it? Any advice?
Could you recommend a decent (colour) wiring diagram? Or video?

Its not too hard, but unless its really shagged, I would just repair what you have. 90% of it is usually fine. Go through it methodically, removing any non original bits, then just replace any rough looking ends and connections with decent quality bits. I think @snotty is a wiring guru?

  3. I did exactly as above.

I thought mine was proper messed up but a bit of tidying up actually revealed it was in that much of a mess. The wiring on these things is never really going to be a work of art anyway.

  4. Repairing what you have is generally best.

  6. It's a significant job. Best to tidy up what you've got, IMO. The cable is normally in good shape internally - it's the terminations that corrode. Worth a good cleanup with a small wire brush, or crimp new ones on as necessary, certainly the ring crimps for the alternator and main feed at the back. Also a fuse box contact tidy-up/clean.

  7. Hi All, l am having a mare with my electrics. Can't get the starter motor to turn over. Bit of background, it has been butchered (ignition switch in steering column has been bypassed to another switch). It did turn over (& start sometimes) but I have had the engine rebuilt and am trying to remove all the poor wiring.
As per the Bentley, I have been able to short out the 2 terminals on the solenoid and it turns over OK. But not on the switch. I have got to the stage where I have wired the solenoid (via a push button switch) to the battery but still it won't turn over ( I hear a faint click when I hit the switch). Any ideas please?

  8. Is the pushbutton at the front of the van? If you haven't used fairly hefty gauge wire, the solenoid won't pull in.

  9. We've taken the push button from the front of the van and brought it to the engine bay. Thanks for the suggestion on the wire gauge (we had given that some thought). So we will get hold of some decent cable and connectors this AM and give it a try. Many thanks for all advice.

  10. Could always fit a new ignition switch ;)

  11. Got the thicker gauge and it worked. Many thanks
