Colourtune with 34 PICT 3 carb

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by No CAN bus, Sep 9, 2016.

  1. Has anyone had any succes with setting a 34 PICT 3 carb on 1600 TP using a Colourtune?

I found mine in the garage last weekend and gave it a go. I couldn't get the yellow flame at idle. I was wondering whether there is insufficient adjustment range to achieve the full yellow flame on this type of carb or if there is an air leak somewhere?

Carb is German with new bushes, gaskets, needles etc.

    Thanks.

Did you let the choke warm up etc. And its quite likely to be set ultra rich especially if you have a chrome mushroom air filter rather than stock.
Or you have a leak and its lean. Or both so when you find the split boot and the badly torqued manifold and the missing piece on a vacuum port on the manifold or the worn throttle spindle then it will go too rich instead..

  3. The flame is yellow when the choke is closed. When it is open I can't get a yellow flame regardless of how the bypass and volume control screws are set. All of the vacuum pipes are new and there are none missing. Spraying easy start on the various manifold joints and carburettor produces no change in engine note. I have an oil bath air cleaner. As far as I can tell the carburettor tunes OK using the usual method, I was just interested to try the Colourtune to see how the tuning steps related to flame colour.

I bought one 20 years ago but it's never been out of it's box. Good to hear I haven't wasted my time.

  5. x2. I bought one, tried it once, then put it back in the box. It's still in the garage somewhere.

  6. I used to use a colour tune when I serviced my Mini and found it very good. I have tried it on my bus, but it the blue flame colour is weak and difficult to see.

    No CAN bus likes this.
  7. @SkutterBob Can you remember if it was possible to get a yellow flame by adjusting the volume screw when the choke was fully opened?

I can't and with this being a newly refurbished carb I am worried it might be running too lean because of an air leak or blocked jet.

  8. I have Ict 34s so no choke. Have you got a vacuum advance dizzy? If not, does the connect to the carb need blocking off?
