Cold starting problem

  1. Help, advice needed!!

My 1978 2.0 fuel injected bus has developed a cold start problem causing it to cough, splutter and stall when cold. When trying to keep it running by pressing accelerator I'm getting black puffs from exhaust.

After many attempts the bus starts to tick over but lumpy, finally after about 5 mins it will run ok.

I initially thought it might be motor arm and cap, but having replaced them it's still the same.

Is there a cold start device that I can disconnect and check as thinking it might be over fuelling until the engine warms little.

    Any advice greatly received!!

theres a fifth cold start injector on the van, i guess it's failed? in the centre of the engine follow the pipes, get it overhauled or maybe the connections are dirty?

  3. Ok thanks for the speedy response.

As you can see by my post count I'm new to these buses, is it easy to find?

yeah as i say you'll see a big oval metal thing in the middle of the engine with 4 tubes coming off it 2 each side, your cold start injector is in the area there, will have a bit of petrol pipe connected and probably a blue push on connector, the other 4 injectors are (obviously) in the area of each spark plug

i'm not saying that's your fault though - just so i'm clear, the fifth injector is like a choke on a normal engine, black smoke and rough running could be anything from ecu fault to air flow meter i guess? if you give madfrankie on here a shout he may know, he isn't an expert as such but he does like a good read up on things and he did a lot of research into fuel injection when his wouldn't start/run
