Is the coil supposed to be insulated when fitted to the bus? Bought a new coil, fitted the four wires and went to fit it. I swear I can hear a spark type noise when it touches the case. Only very tiny though and not all the time. A bit reluctant to fit and start the bus with new coil! This is the coil.
Nope. There’s nothing in the coil wiring that needs grounding, or is connected to the can. If yours is a used coil, it may be arcing internally, likely on the secondary (high voltage) side. PS Is that the right coil for your bus? Label implies it’s for an electronic ignition system.
OK. Maybe it's my mind hearing a spark. It's brand new (and Bosch) so hoping nothing wrong with it. Yeh, correct coil for my 79 Cali bus with funky electronic distributor!
Fitted it. It starts. Panic over. I think the spark noise was a piece of paper rubbing on the engine seal foam. I really shouldn’t be allowed near these engines
At least you stopped and asked rather than carrying on regardless and causing more problems Stopping having a brew and a smoke and giving something a good staring at has saved me loads of hassle and money over the years
I have been known to rush things previously and get things wrong. Oooops. I spent the last two weeks replacing my heat exchanger and exhaust. Just the odd few hours here and there. Definitely pays to take your time!
I once discovered my ht leads were arcing on a mini by spraying the leads with wd40 I thought it was running poo from damp leads so sprayed them I banged my neck of the bonnet and burnt my eyebrows off. At least I found the fault
