Coil getting hot

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dubbdubb, Jun 4, 2014.

  1. Hi , my coil seems to get quite hot is this normal 74 late bay 1.8 engine , think its original coil not sure tho cheers Paul

  2. Shouldn't get hot just slightly warm(mostly due to it's location anyway). Probably means an internal fault and it's likely to fail so I would change it. Dead simple job, just make sure you get + and - wired up correctly.

  3. Changed mine for the self same reason quite recently.
I've had it fail before & don't need to go through that again.
Incidentally, I was advised to change my capacitor at the same time despite it being only about a fortnight old.
Is/was there any reason for this?

  4. Not really. It's hard to damage a condenser. If it was duff, the engine wouldn't run. "Modern" caps don't seem to be the same quality as older ones.

  5. Ha , yes when I first got the bus it was running and some friends came over to tidy it up a little , I carried on doing all the other bits underneath for a few months ball joints etc , then I tried to start it and it wouldn't start , took me three days doing plugs points, dizzy cap ,rotor arm, condenser ,points , fuel lines , anything I could think of to get it going but nothing , I was just about to give up on the third day, cup of tea in hand I saw a red cable from the back of the carb going to the coil , it was on the negative side , I thought we'll red would normally be going to positive , so I swopped it over and bingo , how simple would that have been lmao :hattip:
