Which type of coal is the best? I have been told that the surefire ovals are good for heat and are long lasting. Also does anyone have any suggestions as to where to by from?

    Thank you :)

  2. We buy a mixture of supertherm and an economical burning one I can't remember the name of off our local supplier. They last all night usually with a log or two. I'd order housecoal if I could but they won't deliver it in our (smokeless) zone...

  7. We burn mixed bags of cobbles and trebbles and chuck the odd log on top

  8. We just burn good hard wood during the day.

The wood burner in frontroom is only going if it its really cold and then only normally for an evening.

But the rayburn in the kitchen runs 24hrs a day (once it gets cold, at the mo its on part time days only) and that heats the whole house, drys the washing and we can cook on it. (Just a pity it no longer heats the water)

We burn wood during the day and our locals version of the ovals over night. (We have a local coal yard that deliver - who stock a variety of coals - and they let us try a sample of each to see what worked best for us). A hod of coal lasts about 2 or 3 nights from bed time til up time.

Luckily for us I'm a tree surgeon/forester so good fire wood not a huge issue, otherwise we would really struggle. Pallet wood really doesn't last long in the rayburn! It's like feeding an elephant cherries.

  11. Phone your local coal merchant , and ask them what they would recommend for you. They will ask the type and size of grate/fire you have and should know best as its their job
Just don't buy a bag from the supermarket
