I'm not far off having the baja bug running now, but as with anything slightly non-stock there have been a few niggles (cables too short, clearance for some bits etc).
I went to adjust the clutch cable today only to find the clutch arm on the gearbox moves about 3mm before coming to a complete stop. Before I pull the engine tomorrow to investigate is there anything obvious I've done wrong?

The engine is running a 215mm clutch which I recently replaced (pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing all changed together so I know these match). The gearbox is a CE code.
Do the 215mm clutches need a particular bellhousing?

I don't think they do, the type-4 version is popular with Type-4 into bug due to that If the flywheel was too big the engine wouldn't turn.

  3. Had the clutch stuck on a Berlingo..
I fitted it brand new..

Had to start it in 1st to free it

    a satisfying clunk..

I assume it rusted onto the flywheel...

I'm sure you know but they do sort of do that, then you press the pedal and it moves further, impossible to operate clutch via lever by hand.

  6. Mebbe. As far as I'm aware, things originally fitted with a CE box had 200mm clutches, with the bellhousing that went with it. Later jobbies (CU etc) had the 215s, different bellhousing & starter. Might be your problem (or not).

  7. Have you got a small dog trapped in the bellhousing?

I had a 215mm on the front of a late (claimed 1979) 1600cc AS21 engine coupled with an earlier three rib / 1600 gearbox bellhousing that was previously used with a 200mm clutch.

The clutch extends into the rim of the flywheel, so it has to use 7mm bolts because there isnt enough room for 8mm. The flywheel plus clutch assembly is exactly the same diameter as the 200mm.

Yes I found out on a Sunday before a Bank Holiday. I think I tested things by stealing some 7mm bolts from the rear brake drums..

Nothing magic with the 215mm on a 1600.

Thought again - what if somebody has left the spacer piece in the centre of the clutch that is intended for the use of older style clutch releases , and that is getting in the way . .

I had ideas about the clutch disc being rusted onto the shaft, but that would cause issues with clutch releasing, you would still be able to depress the fingers that release the pressure on the disc.

Maybe its just a heavy duty clutch.

There was a sausage dog in mine once. I eventually tempted it out with some Pedigree Chum

Cheers Mike, that's really useful. I'll have a play tomorrow and see if I can figure it out.

Nope! @Zed was right, I was just being a wolly expecting to be able to move the arm by hand. Adjusted it all today and clutch feels dandy now.

  14. Given that it probably needs a hundred kilos or more pressure to disengage the pressure plate, think you were being a bit optimistic :)

Could have been a dog, tho'. It could happen.

  15. Could be a Westie failure. Expensive...

  16. Dachshunds in the bell housing were a Westfalia option, I believe. The dachshund toaster was even more expensive
