clutch problems??

  1. Hi all,

Went out in the bus for the first time in a few weeks today..

All going fine for a few miles. then the clutch pedal went very light. Still went down to the floor but didn;t feel a lot of resistance.

Within a mile or so it started to get hard to get into gear, then couldn;t chnage gear at all.

Limped home in second, can stop at lights twith clutch pedal down then ride the clutch when pulling off.

If you put it in first or reverse, then start the engine, as soon as you take the brakes off, the bus starts creeping forward/backwards.

The bus had a new clutch around a thousand miles ago, and a second hand gearbox fitted a few hundred miles ago as the old one was crunching into 2nd.

Any ideas what this could be?

Hoping it is something simple like the cable!

    thanks

  3. I reckon your cable's on the way out and is down to a few strands. Not that difficult to replace.

  4. thanks guys - hopefully it will just be the cable - will try & get under the bus at the weekend.

  5. If the clutch is relatively new it can only be the cable I think.

  6. Cable!

Cable, and it's breaking not stetching, they don't stretch unless the strands are snapping.

  8. Yep - had a quick look under the bus and the strands are breaking at the gearbox end. New cable is only £9 at GSF - I assume these are ok?

Is it just a case of replacing the inner cable - undoing at gearbox end, feeding through from pedal end and replacing as a reversal of removal?

    Thanks

  10. ok, got the new cable - started job & just ready to put the old one out (only replacing the inner cable), but when you start pulling the cable through from the pedal end as soon as the metal threaded rod at the gearbox end is ready to go back into the outer cable, it starts to tighten up a bit - I am sure I could give it a good pull and the cable inner will probably be drawn all the way through at the font, but how will I get the new cable back through the outer?

i assume I just feed the new cable inner through the chassis rail then into the outer cable & push? Will it really go through - any tips other than grease and a few prayers?

    thanks

  11. Grease up and push hard :)...

  13. Very true - GREASE being the important ingredient , as much as you can smear on as the cable slips in .... Baybeee

  14. Cut the end off the old cable at the front attach the new cable to it (I normally use electrical tape) and pull through

Easiest if you remove the rear tube first too
    :)

  15. thanks guys - too late to feed the new cable through on the old, although I would be worried about the tape holding the 2 cables together getting stuck in the tube - also figured that pulling the old threaded rod through may clean the inside of the tube a bit.

I had to take the rear tube off as the threaded rod wouldn;t go round the bend.

thanks again - always reassuring to know there's so many helping hands out there!!

  16. ok - job done and all looks good (although I haven't had chance to road test it yet), but something's puzzling me a bit..

I get the fact that the fixed black sleeving fitted to the inner cable protects the cable as it exits the chassis rail towards the front of the bus, but what's the purpose of the clear plastic free-fitting sleeve next to it - it's about 3 inches long and seems to 'float' between the black fixed sleeve and the outer conduit and seems to serve no purpose whatsoever??
