Hi all My steel tube that the clutch cable goes through only goes to the middle of my bus. So i have nothing to attach the bowden tube to... What size tubing do i need? Internal mm external mm i assume the bowden tube goes over it? Also is there any online links for the tubing please. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
I had a similar thing on mine, it had mostly rotted away and previous owners attempts to bodge it had made it too short. I used a length of, I think, 10mm OD steel tube from B & Q, bent it to shape and welded it to the chassis in as many places as I could. Made a massive difference to how the clutch felt and operated.
Go to a Metal Supermarket .. Choose your tube thats long enough and the correct diameter . Pay a sensible price for it. Go to B and Q Choose the wrong diameter bit thats chopped to fit in the display stand. Pay Stainless steel price for it. But OTOH, you probably have a B&Q within range.
I go to my local steel fabricators, Minster Engineering in York who will sell me bits of metal. They send me to the stores and the man cuts off what I want and I go round to the front office with a ticket to pay. Usually buttons.
I used 1/2" OD mild steel, 16SWG. I did need to clearance one end for the bowden cable fitting a little- did it with a 10mm drill bit I think once it was all fitted. Pretty simple job.
As I had to do mine on a Sunday, the only place open was B & Q. It was plenty long enough and about £4.
There's nothing local for me so i looked online I found a few places that sold tubing but by the time p&p was added it was around £15 So i went off to B&Q took the bowden tube with me 12mm Od fits like a glove £6 Cheers Swanners Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Also is this the way the bowden tube is meant to be? 1st pic As ive no bracket there, but i do have a bracket above 2nd pic? Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
You seem to be missing a second, heftier bracket on the rear of the torque tube. The flexi tube mates to this. The one you've shown is the skinnier one that invariably rots off.
So does the tube go under the Axel like the first picture? (This isn't my bus i found the image on Google) Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Maybe it differs with years, but all the lates I've seen have two supports hanging from the tube, a hefty one and a thin support. The flexi conduit butts up against the rearmost thick one, so no it doesn't run under the tube. I'll try and find a pic of mine.
So what is the tab i arrowed for? Sorry for the daft questions but my bus was already in bits when i got her. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Pic of my 78. The thin bracket on the front side (driver end) of the tube invariably rots off - mine's long gone. The flexi butts up to the thicker bracket behind the torque tube.
I can't help much here I'm afraid as mine was a bodged bracket that a previous owner had made up and had disintegrated. Glad you got hold of the tube easily (and cheaply) though!
Thanks everyone for the advice and pictures. I'll make myself a new bracket. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
