Clutch alignment

  1. Type 4

I've just spent the best part of 3 hours jiggling and jiggling at different heights of engine to gearbox and still can't get it in further in than the ring gear

Can you put the clutch in back to front ? :(

I used an alignment tool before I torqued it up, and after....

Anyone have any tips on the best way to get the engine to meet up with the gearbox shaft ?

  2. Is it really difficult and I should persevere or could there be something wrong?

It did come out of there!

You can't put the clutch plate in the wrong way round>
Handbrake on, in gear to lock the gearbox then turn engine to and fro with spanner on the alternator pulley nut as you push/wiggle/shake/rattle/roll.

  4. As above and perseverance, I remember having fun when I put mine back in. Not much help I know, but I know what you're going through.

  5. Thanks guys, I've calmed down a bit now ;)

I must have been really lucky the last time I put it in, aligned and installed 10 mins max  false hope to expect the same I suppose.

    I'll perservere

As you say sometimes they slot straight in, sometimes not.

  7. I've had the same probs putting my type 1 in in the past. Clutch perfectly aligned, still wouldn't shift, despite much faffing and cursing. In the end, it was engine alignment: tranny at a slight angle. Tilt the engine up a bit, and it slots straight in...

  8. DONE IT !!! :chewie:

Thanks Zed, one thing I did learn by turning the alternator pully is that; it might look lined up but if it doesn't spin free then it isn't ! :D
