Clunk from front suspension going over speed bumps

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Zebedee, Jun 21, 2015.

  1. My westy has developed a clunk when driving over speed bumps or potholes.

Can't see anything wrong looking under the bus. I know the front shocks aren't the best as they are old cheap cofap jobbies but they don't look like they are leaking.

Any ideas before i just start replacing everything one by one?

    Ball joint?

  3. That's a bit harsh, no need for name calling :D

  4. Maybe. They are all only a few years old though and still have the rubber gaiters intact on them. Is there an easy way to check them?

    Make gadget as per haynes.
Or remove your shocks and go for a quick rattle down the road?
    Broken ARB?

  6. ARB is fine, new bushes and clamps on it. Might take off the shocks to rule them out.

I hunted for several weeks with mine only to find the front belly pan was loose.

  8. Will check that then. I know it's only held on with 2 bolts and a self tapping screw on mine.

  9. Everything is still attached, though my missus thinks the noise is from somewhere behind her if she is sitting in the passenger seat.
There's nothing loose in any cupboards or the fridge and it sounds like the N/S front suspension to me so I'm stumped.:(

  10. Mine has developed this since replacing my ball joints. Took the bus back to my mechanic who went over all his work proving everything was tight. No play in ball joints.

    It remains a mystery. ..........

  11. Turn up the radio and try not to think about it? ;)

    minirob and lost-en-france like this.
  12. I have found massive play (both side to side and up and down) in the centre swivel pin so maybe that's it.
It does make a clunking noise too.

  13. Of what?

Every time I switch off my engine there's a twang like someone twanging a ruler on a desk but I can't find anything that'll make the noise. Disconnect fan and alternator and it still happens. No loose tin that I can find and joy of joys there's something rattling in the exhaust too - the one that replaced the one with something left from manufacture rattling around in it.

Mine did that. Got out and had a look, couldn't see anything obvious and nothing seemed loose. Took it to a friend who put it up in the air but jacked so the wheels were free. The problem was the nut and bolt at the top of the shock absorber was loose. It didn't show when there was weight on the wheels.
Tightened it up and jobs a good one :)

  16. Of the suspected suspension components? More pairs of eyes are better than one. I had a knock, thinking about it, it was the steering pin in the middle of the beam, took it out, greased it all up and refitted it, job done, no more knock.

  17. Steering pin bushes are defiantly shot. With wheels off the ground it make a clunk when the steering wheel is rocked. Bought a replacement kit from GSF and used the 35% off code so only £16.77p. :)

  18. I had that on mine. Found out it was the spring on the linkage behind the fanhousing.

I don't have such a thing but it does sound like it's from top of engine.
