Cleaning old sticky grease from wiper spindles.

  1. I've just taken the wiper spindles and mechanism apart and the old grease has gone solid.
It took a good 5 minutes to get each spindle apart as its sticky as anything. No wonder my wipers crawled across the 'screen.

What can i use to remove the old sticky grease with and what sort of grease do i use when i reassemble them?
    Will copper grease do?

  2. Copperslip would be ok, something thicker would be better - as for cleaning, scrape off the best you can then brake cleaner and a light scotch-brite rub should take off the residue ..

  3. Ive done mine recently

I used white spirit to remove the old grease and use lith moly grease on rebuild

  4. Petrol to get the old stuff off, then general purpose grease once it's clean. I'd avoid copper grease, as it's not really a lubricant.

  5. I've got a tub of wheel bearing grease somewhere though i suspect its older than i am.:p

  6. It's probably goose fat ;). Use some proper stuff! Castrol LM will do nicely...

  7. But i'd have to buy that. :(

  8. I've used multipurpose grease. the same which I need for the front axle.
The refills won't get totally empty, so I always have some left for these kind of jobs.

  9. Earwax, then, if you're on a budget...
