Cleaning new steel and panels

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by volkswombat, Sep 13, 2012.

  1. I got some new jacking points and inner sills from autocraft and very fine they look too. They are fresh new steel and feel a bit oily, so do i need to clean them up somehow ready for fitting/painting? How much painting of these bits would you do before fitting? Also i got some new arches, i got to remove the black coating from the areas that will be welded right?? Cheers for your help

give them a spray of some form of alcohol based cleaner - we fatigue test steels which sometimes have a spray of oil on to protect them in transit, this cleaner works a treat.

Use a scratch pad to remove the black, usually the area where your are going to weld just needs a rub!

  3. I found most degreasers work well

whte spirit, panel degreser, meths, solvent cleaner, petrol or thinners are all good.

make sure you paint the inside surface before yu weld them on as you wont be able to get a good coverage once they are on the bus ........just make sure you dont paint too close to the area your welding

  4. Cheers dudes. to paint the inaccesible areas i dont need to remove the black coating do i? just primer straight on to it? and for the areas that will be welded just leave em bare or give em a spray of that weld through zinc stuff? sorry for the basic questions!

rough the black coating up with something like grit 180 to give the primer a key, works for us! If they are shiny, fine, the weld thro' primer also works but paint them when you have done the area - remove any welding scale with a wire brush first
