Cleaning an T2 gear box

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by kevin smith, Apr 11, 2020.

  1. Good morning all

I recently took possession of an old engine and gearbox for a T2 and what i was looking for is advice on how to clean the gearbox exterior and the engine body and fins where the alloy looks a little worse for wear.

    I can't attach photos

Step 1 scrape off crud as much as possible
Step 2 use solvent to soften crud .. white spirit or engine cleaner..
Step 3 detergent and water then rinse or parts washer.

You can wire brush off the white stuff.

Theres not a lot you can do with corrosion to repair it .. on an engine block that had sat in a garden I ended up redrilling and tapping holes for tinware screws underneath in solid metal, and building up with JB weld where one of the case stud nuts had missing metal under it.

Basically if its very clean and degreased with carb cleaner just before application, JB Weld will stick and allow you to build up e.g. the surface where the oil strainer seals so it has a flat surface to go on.

  3. Thanks for your reply

I think i managed to attach a photo to a new thread

    What's JB weld?

JB weld is an American brand of epoxy glue, filled with metal powder. It withstands temperatures up to over 200 degrees C, and is one of the stronger epoxy glues, as well as having good filling properties..
So you can fill holes in crank cases, gearboxes , just not exhausts or cylinder heads.

I have stopped oil leaks from cracks with it, provided the crack is enlarged so that there is a solid bead of JB Weld in there being pushed into the crack by oil pressure.

I find it in either yacht chandlers or farm suppliers shops or eBay.
