Cleaning alloy on engine and gearbox on T2

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by kevin smith, Apr 11, 2020.

  1. Good morning all

I recently took possession of an old engine and gearbox for a T2 and what i was looking for is advice on how to clean the gearbox exterior and the engine body and fins where the alloy looks a little worse for wear.

You can always add pictures to a post. Hit Edit and then under More Options is uploading a picture..

Scrub.. mostly worry about steel bits, like rocker covers and bail springs holding them on . They can be replaced though. Big holes in the engine block .. like maybe beside the "clean" but corroded gallery plug area might be a show stopper

Worth running an M8 die down the studs on the cylinder heads to clear rust from threads..

The white fuzzy bit just to the lower left of the bolt on the end of the crankshaft has two plugs pressed into the engine block which cover where oil galleries were drilled into the engine block during manufacture. By the fuzzy appearance of the metal around that area, there will be pitting at least. If corrosion goes between the plug and the engine block, it will leak oil or come out.

You will only find that out by running the engine.

If it leaks there it can be fixed by removing the plug and if there is enough metal, tapping the hole for a threaded gallery plug sold to people who remove the plugs to clean debris from the engine .. like if it died with loads of metal in the oil from some broken part.

I fact I think maybe the first thing to do is change the oil and try run the engine, fit a carburettor, and astarter to the gearbox bell housing, and see if the engine leaks.

You can run it at idle for a minute or so without a cooling fan.. After all thats exactly what some VW engines do when drag racing.. and they go flat out for about 30 seconds too.

  12. I ran the engine before I stripped the tin ware and fan housing and never saw any leak admittedly only ran it for 5 minutes

Is it to the left of the crankshaft bolt directly below the Philips screw

sorry all this is new to me
