Cig Lighter Socket

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SimonRev, May 5, 2018.

  1. OK - thought I'd try and be clever and wire in a temp lighter socket for the sat nav for tomorrow's trip to Stanford Hall

Got a generic lighter from motor spares - pulled the two wires on the side of the heated rear window switch

Tested to see which was live ... put that on the live fitting wire - other on the earth spade connector

Switched isn on and the lighter socket light comes on ... isn off light goes out ...

Great I thought - put in the charger adapter and nothing ... put in cig lighter and nothing ... double checked isn was on and socket light was on ...

Any ideas or is the socket itself a piece of junk ?

    Cheers

    Simon

  2. Sorted .. tested the inside and no power to the bottom bit .. removed junk light connection and connected power to bottom of fitting directly

Charger plugged in and working - will do for a temp fix but obviously need a better unit

The cigarette lighter socket is truly one of the worst bits of junk . If you draw 10 amps through it the plug will melt its way through the socket if there's a bit of oxidation there..

  4. I'm hoping I can find a proper USB type socket instead and hide in the glove box ... this will do for the sat nav as a temp measure hopefully

    Novice questions:
I've just bought a "cigarette" plug-in as well, but only really for a tyre inflation compressor or a mobile phone charger.
Not expecting beginner's luck on getting the wiring right, so about to start research on how others have done it, but my question here is, assuming it's not oxidised, would a small compressor be ok, and should I run the engine when using it? :hattip:

So I bought the bits in the photo for fitting a 12v socket to run a small compressor if I get (another) flat tyre ... and for mobile phone charging.
    Novice questions coming up!

What fuse rating should I get?

As I've got the in line fuse can I "T" off something else like the ambulance fans or the heated rear window?

If so, is the wiring "diagram" in the next pic ok?

Is the centre terminal of the new socket +ve?

Assuming I keep the contacts clean, is a compressor going to run ok via this?

    Thanks in advance :hattip:

  7. I junked the lamp on mine ... so can't you connect pos and neg to the other two terminals on the unit and then if you want add in the inline fuse ...

I used the feed from the heated rear window switch as I can't see me using it any time soon ... I think fuse 7 is the accessory one ....

Someone with more knowledge will be along :)

  8. Connect the body of the lighter and the black lead from the light to ground. Connect the red light lead to the top of fuse 1. Connect the centre contact of the lighter to the top of fuse 8. Chuck the quality Chinese fuse holder over the fence.

    I guess ...
    Can't resist a little green light :)
    It's definitely the weak link.
I had to tape up part of one connector as they were contacting inside the black housing.
Haven't even checked to see which colours are for what in the bus.
Silly really, I know our nervous system pretty well and do as much DIY elecs as we're allowed these days, but expect to melt something if I just have a go at this without asking around first ...

PS ... Found this, among others, and think I should work out which set up I've got (1970 US Deluxe)
... and which set up YOU have?
