Chugging fiiiiixxxed !!!

  1. If setting up the carbs becomes problematical... BD Engineering in Newington is good at tuning these old lumps.

  2. Cheers but I think I'm all good now. All seems to be spot on. I got the hang of it after doing it for the millionth time. Turned out the problems were a misdirected accelerator pump jet.

  3. Nice one!

  4. And over fuelling and too rich!!!
I refitted the carbs with the newly adjusted accelerator pump jet.......still chugging or what I now know is called surging at idle and low speeds. Having got the timing etc spot on by figures, I sat at the back of the bus and revved the throttle hard, the engine kept spluttering nearly dying and smelt of fuel.
I backed off the accelerator pumps by one turn on the adjusting pins, I then adjusted the main mixture by sound and feel rather than the specs of the manual. The bus now idles much smoother and now when I kick the throttle hard I get full revs rather than choking the engine.
In hindsight I should have bought a new weber carb, now I think I've sorted these I may as well keep them!

  5. Every time I see this thread I chuckle. It makes me think of this song:

“stay at home feeling sick with my palm in my pants / chugging on gas / and i’m breaking winnnnnd….. ows with my pain………”

Sorry, I just had to share that. Hope you manage to iron out the chugging.

  6. It's not fixed...... But I think I know what's happening.
It was revving good and all seemed well again, went for a test drive and started chugging again! I decided to look down the throats of the carb when revving.
When I rev gently the stream of fuel on both accelerator jets are nice and strong. When I rev hard quickly the jets sputter and spit. I looked at the fuel filter, at some points it was nearly empty and took ages to fill up again. At other points it was five send I could happily rev again.
Is this the mechanical fuel pump playing up??sounds like it to me.

  7. I think the PO has put the inline fuel filter on the wrong way around! That would be a very easy fix, it looks the wrong way!

I think filters normally have arrows on them for flow direction?

  9. My fuel pump is leaking

  10. Doing my CV JOINTS today, had the bus up on Ramps. I saw a small leak coming from the fuel pump. A screw needed nipping up and now the chugging that's been bothering me since owning the bus is gone! Long but successful day
