Looks like I have an air leak somewhere in my heat exchangers. Had a good look under the van but cant see where the air is getting in. Have reset valves, timing, bought new exhaust but still crackles and pops like a bowl of snap crackle and pop turned up to 11. I would like to ditch the heat exchangers and get j-tubes fitted but have only found one place that builds to order and I am off to Whitenoise in a couple of weeks. Any ideas?
what heads and exhaust flanges are you running? i removed my j-tubes we may be able to swap some bits as my exchangers are ok but the pods and risers are a bit tatty.
It won't be air getting in: don't see how that would work. It'll be the likely exhaust flanges not sealing properly.
If it pops at tickover get under with a length of hose on your ear and point it around to locate the leak.
Open t' engine hatch, take the filter arms off and see if it's popping in the carb(s). If it is, look for split pipes on the idle system and servo take-offs. 5 places in all + the small one under the air filter for the vac operated warm air flap.
T4 heat exchanger exhaust part rots through first next to the flange for the silencer. That would pop when you throttle off. If it was a heat exchanger / head leak it would be constantly louder.
Turns out the bolts holding the manifold to the head have decided that enough was enough and have jumped off at some point and gone on the run?
