Here Ray, I hope it's the correct one as I didn't have the bus close to check:oops:

This is approximately 58mm internal diameter, not sure if you he piece I have is long enough though.

It is cut on an angle and the shortest part is 103mm and the longest part is about 120 mm long.

The piece by the tank was originally slightly angled but a straight piece with an angle cut on one end fits well.

I will see if I can find any PICS from when I did mine. I did it with firewall and paint tin lid off but it was still a bit if a contortionist trick to do it

    Thanks @pkrboo .
It's the thought of disturbing the top end of the FI kit that fries me a bit but I suppose that's better than bursting into a fireball.
Any pics or advice, from anyone, would be good. It's the priority job for TE.

  4. The FI kit will be fine, S boot and upwards take off and pull firewall out.

 So it's not this bit then "Heritage Hose" ??
I'm a bit conf. as to exactly which bit I need. I haven't got the van local at the mo to have a peek & poke in the paint tin lid.
It's a 78 US FI bus & as far as I can see there are two lengths of hose supplied for the late bays. Am I being daft?
Pics would be good to help me visualise what's going on.
Has anyone done thread on this?

  6. Sorry can't be more clear but I changed mine and pretty sure I got my replacement from custom and commercial and even though the original was a 30 degree elbow the new one was a straight pipe which fitted fine with clips each end! Like Pkrboo I took paint tin off and got in through there! Hope this helps :)

fizzpro, can you remember was your bit of hose about the same as pkrboo's then at 120mm or so or was it longer?
The one with the bend is 330mm according to the Heritage catalogue.

  8. Sounds right and you have to cut it down.

  9. That one is for the pre 75 late bay.

    You need the shorter length.

I will do some PICS at lunchtime as I have my van in work today

  10. Really sorry can't remember :(
Pretty sure it was from custom and commercial though :)

  11. Just ring VWH and ask, that's what I did. But I'm sure that I had to cut mine down as I recall it is the same piece for the prototype bay and VWH only hold the 1 piece. I know because I rang them from Techenders as I went to fit it.

  12. Not prototype, 'bloody auto text', early type 2...

Thanks SeanOC. Heritage are great but I wanted the experience of youse guys wot have actually fitted the parts. By posting it on the forum it may encourage others who are unsure about tackling the job to have a go :)

My confusion becomes clarity! Cheers chaps.
Look forward to the pics later pkrboo. If the weather's agreeable we could do a start to finish how to with images at TE unless there's already one buried on the forum somewhere?
I think there's a tricksy breather junction behind the firewall as well as the filler neck that I'd like to do...

Not the best PICS but hopefully you get the idea, I think i put a PIC up earlier that shows the length of the metal pipe

Great...it's a lot of grief for such a small thing!

  16. Just read this thread all the way through and its awesome, you have done a really amazing job. i have one question about your propex install, you said you use it when the vehicle is moving to supplement the van heating but, I noticed you didn't seem to have one of those brackets (VIM) for the flues. Do you not really need them then, what are they about? I'm just about to install a whale underfloor heater in mine and have been told a VIM bracket is essential but, when I look at the brackets all they seem to do is hold the two flue ends about 6cm apart, whereas without the bracket and for using whist not moving the installation has them at least 50cm apart seems weird.

Thanks Yorkieman. I'm not sure what the VIM is all about either! I certainly couldn't justify the 30 odd quid they wanted for it.
Now the standard underway heating on Chip is pretty awesome so I wasn't mindful of needing the propex when moving.

In order to use the VIM bracket as they suggest would mean an odd route for the exhaust and combustion air-in tubing, which they say has to be the length supplied otherwise it won't balance the system.
I wanted the exhaust to exit to the side of the bus, rather than somewhere underneath if that makes sense.

So in the end the two external tubes are where they are as per the pics above , and the propex still works when travelling!

I will say that on one occasion it faulted just after we pulled in following a longish run. Maybe that was due to airflow around the intake, but I did the "2 second reset" thing with the stat controller and it burst into life again.

As a side, we also have the Whale branded unit & Propex will honour the guarantee etc. if you mail them to register the serial number. It's just branding.

We've just spent a the weekend in the Peaks and the heater has come into it's own. We love it...
