Checking end float

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by lowie, Dec 6, 2012.

  1. Does anyone know of a way of checking end float without getting a dial gauge (is that what it's called)I ve read of a way of doing it "in keeping your VW alive "
But I can't get it clear in my head

  2. The end float is the forward backward movement of the crank inside the case.
Basically you need a tiny amount of end float to allow for oil to get places etc.
But too much is a obvious sign of engine wear.
Basically if you can feel the movement there is too much.
Push the crank as far into the engine as possible then pull it out if you feel movement then there maybe too much. If you can really feel it then it has too much.
Without using proper gauges etc you wont be able to really tell about wear limits etc. Unless someone else knows better?

Is engine out? Rig up nuts/bolts and use feeler gauges.

  4. Sorry I should of explained I ve got to fit a new fly wheel as mine has lost some of its teeth it's a newish engine (2000 ish miles)and a brand new flywheel I was hopeing to get someone else to do it but it looks like I may of been let down :(
I ve been made aware that the end float will need checking and hopefully thats all I am not worried about the rest of the job just checking the end float is my only worry

    Nuts/studding through engine/gearbox fixing hole.
Fit bit of flat to it so it overhangs flywheel.
Fit bolt to that so you can screw it to touch the flywheel.

Pull flywheel first, screw down bolt, push flywheel, insert feelers to measure.

    Hope that makes sense.

  10. Give it a go with feelers as per Zed (dial gauge is a lot easier ;) ), then do your shim sums. If you're lucky, may not need to change anything, but you won't/can't know until you've measured it.

You shouldn't need to reshim it for the new flywheel, but there's only one way to find out...
