Cheap sun canopy.

  1. Posted this before without pics, but I made a sun canopy for under £30 (all bits from ebay). Blue tarp, tent canopy poles, pole clamps (can get these from JK) some guy ropes, tent pegs and three bits of fat bamboo at 18 inches long (or old test match cricket stumps!!!!) Place the tarp on the gutter then the poles over the top in the gutter and hold in place with the pole clamps. Works ok but its not 'Carling' but with the money saved can buy a lot of 'Stella' (drink that is)!

    Looks the dogs nuts.

  7. I've seen them made from a cheap 1.8m x 1.8m shower curtain too as available from pound stretcher for about £3.50

  8. Uh. I just spent hundreds on one from Puddlejump (well, a joint birthday press from the family) and this one is just as good. More fun making yourself too.. Nice work.

    Blimey, I was ripped off!

Knowing what I know now about "sun" canopies and rain, I'd be considering if the design will cope with water pooling on it. Mine doesn't and once it's done that overnight it's stretched and more inclined to keep doing it. Sun canopy indeed. Next time I'll be more realistic and get a rain canopy.

Which one did you get? We got this one a couple of years ago.

  11. ages ago I made a mock up for a canopy that covered the whole side...bit like the one below...meant that the cab door could be opened as well

never got beyond the tarp and gaffa tape stage, but it would work well...polycarb pole curved to shape, pushed thru a sleeve like a tent

Spare sail and hard to resist when you notice the luff will fit in a figure of eight strip. However, ultimately too pretentious for further experimentation. :D

  13. No...i like it:cool:

be good if you could hoist it, or trim for prevailing conditions....now, where to fit the cleat:thinking:

I gave it to a lady with a raggy sail last week. The sailing club isn't quite like others, we have one pretty well-off but down to earth member who buys a new sail every other year and lends his old one permanently to someone else. At last count there were three boats sailing with his old number and 2 with the number of his new boat and him too. lol We're all too tight to change the numbers. Makes it fun for the race officer.

  15. I think it was your recommendation on an earlier thread that made me check them out. So thanks!
I got one with a side like yours but a pitched roof, in lime green to match the van. Only just got it and not put it up yet so no pix. But I will soon.
Oh, and pom pons all round. Sorry about that.
Great looking van, that. Love the matching dog bowl!
