Whats with the deal on having sidelights in the headlights chaps? Both mine and Birdys buses run with the indicators illuminated & dont have side lights in the headlamps...we have MOT's.

At worse, if you get a fail, replace lens with a clear one, pop a clear bulb in the side light and an orange bulb for the indicator..sorted innit..they cant fail you for non clear side lights then, surely its only the same as those bloody annoying Nissan with sepearate side & headlamps

As far as I know they are the original sealed beam us units in the 77 I'll have a look tomorrow for the arrows, they certainly dont have sidelights in (whereas Gusbus' does & he is lhd too but his lamps have the arrows opposite to rhd).

VWH sell the replacements for ~£30.00 each and they have the mounting plates too (with tlb discount it drops the price by a few quid)

I have to confess that mine made by Wagner (no mention of made in uk) , do have side lights in the headlights. Not sure how they came because they were fitted when I bought the bus but it seems someone glued bulb holders type things to the lights and then taped a
Bulb holder in. There was a small uncovered area in the reflector. The beams however do bend to the left though.

Ahh sorry, my mistake, I thought you are currently running same as mine with no side lights in the headlights.

No no no. By law you need to show a white side light. You can always fit clear indicator lenses. Problem solved :) And then hope they don't get picky at white indicator bulbs.

Hmmm I get more puzzled!! I'll let you know what the MOT man says when he gets his renewal, we'll take him mid january and get it sorted accordingly!

I am now confused as to why he passed with the lights ala US style

I've said it before about BMW, Range Rover and Volvo having amber side markers and I managed to get a photo of the BMW. The amber light though not in the picture is clearly visible from the front.

But they still have white side lights.

we had this dicussion on old tlb and having 13 years working at lucas i'll give my thoughts...
u.s busses as imported will have 7 inch sealed beam with just dip and main in the lens.
they do not need a side light as the indicators include "marker lights" in the u.s this is achieved with a twin filament bulb - like a brakelight bulb in the uk - 5 watt part is marker light 21 watt part indicator, there is also a tiny single filament bulb in the edge of the indicator that makes the marker light viewable from the side (some u.s states require side markers) this means in effect there are 3 filaments in the indicator body.

some seal beam have a "cut out" in the reflector to affix a side light adaptor (like birdy says)

some have a bulb holder attatched.

there are a few ways to achieve legal u.k lighting i'll list a couple.

replace u.s sealed beam with uk and fit white indicator lenses, the side marker light will then glow white and solve your white sidelight probem, however this will cause a different problem because your twin filament bulb is white, not a problem in itself apart from the fact your indicator will be white...which is ok if your car is pre 1973.... so you could paint the bulb orange but then of course the other filament comes on on marker lights so you'll have a brighter orange filament than the little single white bulb you have for side marker....you could disable the one half of the twin filament to solve this though.

replace the sealed beam with a conversion to h4 like i did and keep your u.s markers orange, all you do is take a feed off the marker to the new white bulb in the headlight and bob's your uncle, i did this and i have all white and orange at the front plus i wired my door reflectors up too, if you click on my sig to van videos you'll see my van lighting in the dark and see how it loooks.

it is perfectly legal to display orange marker lights as long as you also have white sidelights, however i have mine on quick release connectors so if i want i can turn off all orange at the front.

good god Ricky, thats one comprehensive comment...giving me some work for the MOT in January...I guess the guy who passed my MOT test wants severly beating with a sharp stick..I have a pair of headlights from Gusbus, with sidelight openings in them, I guess I'll pop these in and run with them from Jan onwards..bugger!

  15. ^ as above. Nice summary

Make life easy and fit a set of UK H4s with sidelights. These'll also perform the useful function of letting you see where you're going.

Folk mutter about the US-style sidemarkers in the indicators, but if you've got white sidelights in the headlights I can't find anything in the regs that says you can't show an seperate amber light to the front.

The more I think about it, the more I am going to go along that route...seems the best solution!

I don't rate H4's. My mk2 Golf had them and they were awful. My sealed beams are brilliant.
