As title I’m going to clean up the underside and then waxoil

I’m looking for recommendations for products, I’ve use bondo red oxide before but I thank they have changed the recipe.

  2. Rustbuster Epoxy Mastic.

  3. I would go for plain old Rustoleum. I did the back of my van with Epoxy Mastic, and there’s signs of rust already :(. Rusto I did in places years back is rock solid.

Agree, Rusto is the stuff. My tip is do it in a light colour (mine's yellow), it's nice and light and easy to see under there.

  5. If you can get it back to bare metal, Dynax recommend their Electrox followed by their black epoxy mastic.

Did this on the Bug's floorpan, it may, or may not be lick-able, you'd need to ask Snotts for his opinion on that ;)

Barry Haynes I dance in leopard skin mankini’s

What ever you do don’t use por 15 it’s Marmite, I did mine and after 2 years it’s starting to peel off even though I prepared the chassis thoroughly, I should of used rustoleum

  8. @JamesLey uses Raptor, it can be tinted to colour match, my paint shop did the underside of my front fenders with the stuff, be an interesting comparison against the mastic.

Interesting I did some with epoxy mastic from rust buster a couple of years ago and it’s peeling off even though it’s supposed to go on surface rust.

  11. I sprayed the whole underside with Dynax S50. There is a tougher one for under the arches but this has stayed on mine, its like a black wayoyl. It differs in the fact that you can get it out the tin, It also comes with a meter long pipe and nozzle so you can spray it in your cills, front arches etc, Fantastic stuff.

  12. It’s not bad stuff, but you do need to prep and degrease beforehand. Did the back end with it and it’s sort-of lasted. Beware that you can become sensitised to it if your painting right in front of your nose: I can’t bear to go near the stuff any more: my chest tightens up and eyes start running.

Rusto seems far better as it goes over just about anything. Does take a good while to harden off, tho’

POR15 is awful. Rusts and peels off if you don’t prep properly.

  13. …or if you’re feeling lazy and just want to stop the rot, the brush-on black Waxoyl goes on well on wheel arches. Dynax UB for the rest of it.

  14. Rustoleum Combicolor metal paint contains rust treatment and in my experience gives a nice smooth finish which is easy to wash down to keep the underbody and wheel arches clean. I would go for a light colour like grey rather than black. Or you can order VW matching colours from Avenue Coatings (Tools-Paint) in Slough, on ebay or their website.
