Has anyone done repairs to their chassis and the inner sills of their ride. I ask as I don't have a roll over jig and I am wondering if it is going to be easier if I remove the cargo floor thereby gaining access to it all.

I believe the panels from Alan H Schofields are recommended.

  2. hi yes it is easier with the floor out for better access but it can be done with the floor still in
I done mine with the floor out but that was only because the floor had alot of wholes and dodgy repairs anyway
    hope that helps

  3. No need to remove cargo floor. You'll drill out loads of spot welds to remove the old sills and then plug weld through from above. Easy peasy.
I bought JK sills which were excellent.
Jacking points are easy enough to weld in from underneath and because of the gauge of the steel you can wack the power up and linger lovingly in the weld pool. Good fun...

I appreciate that there an awful lot of spot welds to drill to get the floor out but I think it will improve access and help me do a better job than laying on my back continually.

Oh for a cheap rollover jig...........

  5. Doing one at our shop now. Floor out (ramp is occupied), all cross members, out riggers, inner & outer sills & jacking points cut out & cleaned up in 3 days (2 men), front top hat under the bulkheads is a pig. I recommend an air chisel! good luck! :)

I've done the back method many times , don't like chopping unnecessary good metal out

  7. Much easier with the floor out but all depends how good / bad the floor is .
If the floor needs work then it`s a no brainer BUT they`re not cheap at £275 per side

If you buy from Schofields and can wait a month collect from Volksworld and save 10% - could be worth over a hundred quid if you buy everything ...

  8. Floor was rotten too so had to come out but back method is dictated by ramp being taken, normally we do it from underneath, just taking out any rot.

The van isn't mine, it's the one my brother purchased in January (see the thread IS IT WORTH £6K)

I may start a short restoration thread as some might be interested or just want to ridicule us/ berate us on our work.

  11. Small after thought. If you do cut the floor out & the bus is outside, board up the hole to keep the local cats out, they ******* on everything & it stinks!!

He`s a right old moaner but was well impressed :D

Alan H Schofields is located just over 'The Snake Pass' for me, so I would collect it all from there in one hit in the hope it would save some brass.

The cargo floor actually appears to be solid but I am assuming that if I am careful I will be able to take it out and put it back without too much difficulty.

  16. I bought the sill and outrigger bundles which you get a discount on anyway AND an extra 10% off when i picked up at Volksworld . The floor halves were collected from Slough , should have been 550 got `em for 495 - every little helps :D

They don`t advertise the discount but speak to them and they`re more than happy IF you collect

  17. It is ribbed so depending where you cut (which won't be as close as you think) you will need a ribbed profile same as the cargo floor to fill the void when welding it back in.

  18. Sounds like a plan - a plasma cutter would make life easier if you could lay your hands on one ??

    :hattip:

  19. Oooh careful with a plasma cutter, I cut through the clutch tube & cable with a disc! There is stuff close by under there & a plasma takes no prisoners..... You don't need to be too close to the edge anyway as you need something to weld to.

I don't have a plasma cutter (or access to one). I'm hoping that drilling out all the spot welds is all I'll have to do to be fair as the back of the floor has been welded before where it joins the panel in front of the fuel tank.

I can't post pictures on the resto thread ive tried to create as a moderator has got to approve that thread so I can upload via Tapatalk.

Oops my bad.. I've tried to post in featured Resto's and not restorations in Mech Tech
