Chassis I.D

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Flying-scissors, Sep 12, 2015.

  1. I am potentionly purchasing my first ever air cooled project, which I am led to believe is a Devon camper van.
Hopefully one of you kind people out there can help me identify it.
It's on a M registration plate and has a chassis number of 2332098945.
One of my main questions is, will it be, or become, road tax exempt ??

    Many thanks, Jo.

PS: How do I decode the number, and what does it all mean !!

  4. If it isn't being a '73 you should be able to get it changed to tax free.

Post some photos and we'll be able to let you know what type of Devon conversion it is.

  5. Many thanks for the replies.
It belongs to a family friend who has had it stashed in their garage for nearly fifteen years. It comes out for an MOT every year and then goes back in the garage !! It needs a little TLC but I've been offered first refusal.
As I say it's my first venture into the air cooled world and find it all a little daunting.
Photos to follow soon, I hope.

  6. Have a look for your "M" (manufacturing options) plate, either behind the driver's seat or under the dash on later busses. Once you decode it, it'll tell you a lot about your bus.

A great opportunity if it is in a good condition.

But please remember that £250 a year is a drop in the ocean compared with the costs of full-on restoration and maintenance of one of these vehicles. Or look at another way, that is five visits to the filling station.
If that is a strong factor in your choice of purchase, maybe you cant really afford it.

If the V5 does not indicate it is old enough to qualify as a Historic Vehicle then you may have to contact the Volkswagen Museum. Either to buy a Birth Certificate at €50, or maybe you can email them for proof.
I have a Devon, first registered 1975, hence N registered, but actually built in October 1973 so it qualifies easily as Historic.

  9. Your potential van was first registered 19/11/1973 so is tax free. Its currently blue and white and used to be orange and white, and has had 10 previous owners! :)

  10. Your favourite colour is blue, and you'll marry a sailor.
