Changing Rear Shift Bush

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bay Dreamer, Oct 16, 2022.

  1. Does anybody know how to setup the handbrake lever in the cab. I messed around with mine to fit a new handle.

There is a threaded bolt with a pivot joint that attaches the horizontal bar to the vertical lever. Does anyone know how far in or out that threaded pivot bolt should be?

  2. Does that code tell you anything interesting? Good box?

Yup, as per what Zed said. Another cross off the list as it matches a 1600 engine...assuming that's what you've got ;).

However there are perhaps too many numbers. Usually we'd expect to see code letter s x2 then day x2 numbers, month x2 numbers and year..usually one number ie. 4 for 1974.

It's perhaps been rebuilt and the builder has put his or her own reference on the casting. Cogbox used to use a 4 digit number for example.

Soooo. Its been in the back of my mind that maybe the box doesn't match the 1600 after all, that's why I asked. In the light of the fact you say it won't pull in 3rd or 4th uphill.

    Just a thought.

  6. Yes, that is the part. I shouldn’t have fiddled with it but I wasn’t sure why it was unthreaded and whether it was supposed to be wound further in.

Trying to get it back on the vertical lever is difficult because you have to put tension on the lever.

  7. The wiring loom suggests it was a type 4 engine so maybe it was a 1700cc originally.

  8. I'd just screw it in so that it lets you get you get 5 clicks with the handbrake cable tight. Pretty arbitrary.

As I was in the van today i had a look at mine for you. There's about 20mm thread showing and looks like you need to adjust it out far enough so you can hook the spring on.

  11. Thanks. Yeah that seems about what mine was. I have got it roughly back in that position. Strange that there is adjustment there rather than a non-threaded swivel of some kind.

Vw probably thought : Why use two parts when one cheap one can do the job and it doesnt need a spanner to lock a swivel in place on the handle..
