Changing a type 4 oil cooler while the engine is still in....

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bertie-bus, Jul 11, 2016.

  1. anyone done it? Anyone got a how to if they have done it?
I've got an oil leak coming from above the filter so that's the likely suspect as the pressure switch is ok.
    Cheers in advance :)

  2. Its not the filter mount is it?? I thought I had a leak from the cooler - the filter wasn't done up tight enough. Doh.

Someone on here said it was just about possible to do the cooler in situ....

Anyhoo. yes it is but its not easy. exchangers need to come off. or at least be loose or you would need to butcher the corners to get the fan shroud off.

so from memory - remove rear tin, fan, alternator etc to take off fan shroud and its sitting there good to go! sounds easy but its fiddley.

You'll struggle to get the cooler off the studs, but you can draw it back enough to change the seals.

  5. Well I started the van this morning to move the drive around and the oil light didn't come on with ignition.... So I popped the lid and found the wire soaked in oil and a little bit of oil on the left too tin too! Looks like the pressure switch could be the culprit after all! I has driven 100 miles this weekend with the caravan on the back to Redcar and back and there was a little must/spray on the tailgate and the caravan front box. I shall mark and move the dissy so I can get the switch out and check it.
Cheers for the advice thus far chaps :)

  6. you shouldnt need to remove the dissy to do the switch!

  7. It needs turning as the vac part is right over the top of the switch, it's a tight fit :-/

Take it right out along with it's still tight clamp. No loss of adjustment then.

Don't turn the engine while it's out, the drive shaft can rise up and damage the brass drive gear inside, it's normally held down by the distributor.

  12. You will need a 24mm deep socket .

  16. Aye, and a 10mm dowty washer , makes a better seal than the copper jobby .

  17. well i guess it is the switch at fault, ive removed the dissy today before work and when i cleaned the switch with a bit of cleaner to check..... its all loose inside the nut!
    ordered one from GSF

  18. but didnt see anything about a washer.....

No washer of any type, it seals on the tapered thread.

  20. Thanks - You've inspired me to check mine, as I was also thinking it was the oil cooler (seals) leaking.
