Thanks @vanorak and @Owen Snell. I’ve asked the same question here and on several other forums in the past and never really had an answer before. My guess is that the majority of people simply use the curve that presumably is pre-installed or programme a known safe curve that may be, but probably isn’t, correct.

  9. Yes, most people probably don't bother. The base curve will work and will be safe, but it won't be optimised. There should be a gain in smoothness going crank fired and mapped control, just because the sparks will always be at the same time with the minimum of scatter, but to get a bit more performance / mpg you're going to need to set the map up properly. I suppose most people don't bother, because with ignition alone the gains will be quite small and a mapping session on a rolling road will cost a few hundred quid.

I think I’ll use my usual approach when I want more power – just make a bigger engine, like @zed but mine will have a longer stroke and a smaller bore but only 2316cc.:)

    There isn’t a replacement for displacement.

  11. Apart from FI, or a Turbo or Nitrous!

Turbo, supercharger or NOS maybe but FI, dream on, bigger is still better.

  13. FI will get you a bit more, if that's what you want from it. I want more flexibility and torque low down and I think FI will deliver a lot more than carbs can for a given capacity. Long stroke is good for that too, what configuration will 2,316 cc be?

  14. Early next year we should get some comparisons anyway, with my new build and @zed going bigger with a big bore type 4. If you build a stroker on carbs, there should be some good comparisons to be made.

@Clive Neilands apologies for the thread highjack, we seem to have drifted off topic but for what it’s worth I won’t be using a CB black box; it seems pointless (sorry) unless you also get rid of the distributor.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

If you put some proper B&P's on that you would have a 2.7L. :)

3.2L would be good, being double a T1.

But I’ve seen what you had to do to make them fit. And I have a CHT gauge. And the carbs and valves are too small. And it gets way too expensive for an ancient VW engine.:)

96mm jugs will still get hot of course but shouldn’t distort too much and I’m thinking of Biral liners to dissipate the heat a bit better. And before Paul says it I know Nickies are the answer but they’re silly money.

80mm stroke is about as long as you can get to fit without crank, or rather big end, to cam clearance issues and I don’t want to use a cam with a small base circle.

  20. Im going to first get some of those fittings to connect to the vacuum advance on my dizzy to see if i can get the vacuum advance working....
