So who uses which and which is best for Aircooled engines? The Valvoline is synthetic mineral which some are not keen on. Or is it more about the zddp content which makes it the oil of choice.
We have used this one for the past year: https://www.vwheritage.com/zca115004-castrol-classic-20w50-engine-oil-454-litre-vw-spare What I have found is that it hasnt dirtied (gone smelly black) as much as the Morris Goldenfilm we have previously used and the oil consumption is slightly better too, which Im happy about
Asking regarding mainly first couple of of oil fill/ changes /running in on a freshly rebuilt type 4.
Ahh that makes sense. We used the Valvoline with the ZDDP for cam burn (oil and filter changed immedialty after the 20 min break in) then 500 miles on zddp again then after that back to normal oil
I've been using 20/50 from Wilkinson's or Halfords, cheap and cheerful but I change it far too often! Sent from my SM-J320FN using Tapatalk
You might find this article interesting. https://www.enginebuildermag.com/2014/10/break-in-oils-and-assembly-lube-needs/ Whatever oil you decide to use you must run in the cam for 20 minutes or so and then you must get some load reversals on the engine to bed in the rings. Don’t let it idle and don’t run it with only a light load.
Interesting reading 77Westy thanks for posting that. I think I will go with their recomendation & use break in oil for the initial bedding in of the Cam etc. This seems ok & contains a decent amount of zddp.
I pick up some 15W40 from Eurocarparts whenever the sale has good % off and change start of the season, after 2k and then near end of season so it's sat in garage with clean oil in her.
Not so fast matey! I’ve often wondered if there is any difference in those 20/50 type mineral oils, as in ,Iget the one from Halfords and always do, but, is it the same as the Comma one and the Castrol one and the Heritage one??? Is it made by the same company then rebottled and rebranded then allowing us consumers a little ‘’’Marque’’’ distinction? Wilco also do a mineral especially for classic motors, the blurb on all of them sounds remarkably similar Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Argue at Will
I always imagine the stuff in the Cheap Classic Tin Can style is what you get after cleaning up recycled oil... I still buy it.
