Carburettor 34PICT3 - Idle questions and setup

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by louigi_cornetto, Feb 24, 2017.

  1. I've had some stalling issues with my engine, standard 1600 twin port with 34PICT3, normal running is okay from the main jet.

From the attached photo's from under the carb, I'd like to understand better what the various red circled ports do, and what should be visible with the throttle valve closed?
Does my throttle valve need adjusting from the photo?

From the exploded diagram, which parts are specifically for the idle circuit that I should be checking in detail?

    Thanks

  2. The group in the pic are the progression holes that move you from idle on to the main jet. The other one is the path to the idle circuit.

Is your cutoff solenoid working? Are the idle mixture and idle speed set correctly? Any air leaks?

I have had issues with mine, these carbs are very sensitive to air leaks so worth checking the gaskets on the inlet manifold.

  4. I think when it's set right the butterfly valve is not quite fully closed so that the idle hole is just exposed. This is done by setting the idle cam up correctly as per the instructions. Otherwise, yeah check for air leaks - they are a bugger and kept me busy for a while with mine!

  5. I found these in my inlet manifold. No wonder the thing wouldn't idle .

If you do have a leak may I suggest IMG_0144.JPG

  8. Set the plate by getting idle screw to just touch then another quarter turn should leave a gap just less than a mm between plate and carb body..... Or get some of those nice pants...

  9. Also worth checking for air leaks is the round blanking plug on the front (facing the engine lid) side of the carb. May sound strange but They sometimes leak air. and the vac take offs.

  10. Following a carb strip, clean and rebuild my idle seems to have returned. Needs a bit of a tune up now but thanks for the comments.
    Nothing particularly identified though.

  11. A vacuum gauge is the best way to set the throttle arm position, attached to the vacuum take off for the dizzy it tells you as soon as the throttle plate opens when you wind the screw in.

  12. Sounds interesting, have you an example of the type of gauge?
Is this reading the vacuum in the manifold below the throttle plate?
