Carburetor Problem

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Hearny, Jan 25, 2015.

  1. I started my van a couple of weeks ago and it sounded as if the choke was full on. When I went to start it today it started for a few seconds then cut out. I tried to start it again with no success.

I have taken the plugs out and they black and sooty. I have taken the filter of and butterfly's are closed. They don't even open when I push the accelerator peddle.

I no expert but should they not be open a little bit (see pictures)

  2. Sounds like the accelerator cable has snapped or the carb mechanism has failed .
    `Butterflies` should open !

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

...but they are choke butterflies and should be shut if the chkes on - push them open and look at the next set down.

  4. I know this may sound crazy but I changed the oil and fuel filter.

    I'm guessing it's just coincidental

  5. I stand corrected ...

On the progressive carburettor that you have, as with the stock carb, there is a vacuum operated actuator that pops the visible choke flaps open if you accelerate .. with the engine running.

In any case check the 12 volt feed to the choke heater on the back of the carb.

But the main thing I can tell from the filter base and the black plugs is that the jetting has probably been set rich because you have a 'non-optimal' shiny bling air filter arrangement. That kind of filter is for SoCal in summer.

To overcome the times in the UK when the fuel is pooling in the cold/freezing manifold (cooled by evaporating petrol) , an excessive amount has to be fed from the carb. Then when it warms up if ever, it is too rich.
Get a stock air cleaner with a hot air feed and get it tuned up then.

I have the same carb and my plugs come out nicely brown.
