Carbs

  1. My 1700 cc Type 4 engine has been fitted with a single EMPI (Weber copy) progressive 2 choke carb. When I started using the van last week, the fuelling was all over the place and it would only accelerate on very light throttle openings. The van has been down to a local carb tuning specialist who has stripped it all down and got the mixture about right (was very rich), as well as fitted a stronger (OEM Weber) accelerator pump diaphragm to try and sort out the flat spot. Hopefully it will be better when I go to pick it up, but essentially there is a limit to what can be done with the carb design and the very long inlet manifolds, especially with regard to throttle response.

I'm not keen on going down the route of twin IDFs or twin DRLAs with a standard 1700 cc engine as it seems like this is going to be much to much choke for low speed running, so am looking at the Weber 34ICTs. Anyone got experience of running this setup on a Type 4 motor?

  2. webber 34ICT's are pretty good if you dont mind warming the motor up before taking off. they dont have a choke on them so starting from cold can be interesting if not a bit of a long process. good power from them though :) I say do it

  3. Absolutely cannot help re your basic enquiry mate ,but ,twin carbs ?only from experience you hear , on a cold winter morn in Scotland as previous poster opinioned >starting is interesting ! and soooo *******es of my neighbours ! (wouldn't be without them thou ")cos just thought bout that ,bus wouldn't run !,right?(having a blond moment here )

  4. Could always change the venturis to something smaller

  5. the perfect carbs would be 36 DRLAs i have a set on mine drives great ,

  6. Looking on Eurocarbs or VWH, that's an expensive option!

Dells will make a 1600 go almost as well as my 1955 with ICT's. Don't waste your money on ICT's, they're really rather poor in comparison. If you go for the DRLA's be warned you need to have it jetted correctly as it'll go like the clappers and knacker you engine if it's too lean.

  8. Aaah...you didn't mention that you were being tightfisted ;).

Dellortos - you know you want some...

    There's a good seller of DRLA's on ebay - alfa something-or-other, I can't remember.
You want OG ones, not the new copies. ;)

  10. I agree with bluething. I have ICT 34s on a type 4, 2l for a few years now and been very pleased. seem to be a good compromise on power/fuel economy. yes they do need a few minutes to warm up though but not the worst thing in the world. be prepared to buy a new set of air filters though as the ones that come a stock are made of soft cheese. I am lookin at getting a set of k and n filters, gonna be £60/70 I think.

  11. So if dells would make a 1600. Go as well as yours what will a set of dells do for yours ?

There is set of 40 dells on ebay buy it now for 200 quid now . I paid 150 for a set of 36's a few weeks ago .so they are not as expensive as euro carb ......

Make it go like Marmite off a shovel? :D

I need manifolds and a decent linkage as well + the filters and jets to suit, it all adds up. I have a laser sailing dinghy to sell though. ;)
I don't want an old leaky corroded set either. If you keep buying them all what chance us mere mortals. :(
I thought I might fit 40's as less of a fight to get hold of a pair.
Perhaps you might sell me some cheap. :D

  13. I only have 3 pairs not like the whole worlds supply ....... One pair of 36's has been on for 3 years ,currently turboing my 40's for the supercharger and machining new filter bases / mod rings . I do have a spare pair of 36 's but they will need work .I have most of the correct vents, airs emulsion tubes etc also type one fannymolds although not offset ones ,filter bases

Need work puts me off a bit - assume that was the £150 pair?

Think I need offset manifolds for CB linkage? I'm not keen on bell crank.
Not given too much thought yet (not having the money spare). If I start to make plans I'm likely to follow through and overdraw. :D
Income expenditure a bit tight at zed manisions.

  16. Yes my plan was to ultrasonic clean them and rebuild them for the supercharger but when I looked into putting o rings on the shafts there is not a boss like on the 40's ,hence buying the 40's '
They are not actively for sale but you never know

  17. What do you want for the 36s? Don't mind a bit of work, will just have to cost up the other parts. See how I get on when I pick it up tomorrow and whether it's driveable with the progressive.

  18. Picked up the van this morning and although it's not perfect, it is actually driveable now so all of the small things done have added up to a big improvement. Still not sure which way to go on the carbs - recommendation from the carb specialist is still to go for 2 x single choke Webers. Will drive it for a bit and see how it goes.
