Hi all I've been running a Pict 34 with no problems till the blanking plate on the carb body dissapeared yesterday. Currently blocked off with a penny and gaffer tape to get us home yesterday. This has given me the opportunity to get an upgrade past the wife Was thinking of a single twin choke but been told they can be troublesome so now looking at dual single chokes, but these don't have a cold start and I would guess need balancing??? Apart from economy and getting the bill past the wife, what problems could I be facing on a 1600 TP Cheers
everybody will dis weber progressives quoting manifold length, flawed design etc. etc......but if you take the time to reinstate the stock pre heated air filter system, and, ensure the inlet heat risers are getting sufficient heat into the manifold....once jetted properly (not right out of the box) they are perfectly suited to an otherwise stock 1600TP....electric choke, vac signal take off, etc. @mikedjames has done a great thread on his experiences with a prog....well worth a read before considering alternatives.....nothing wrong with a good properly rebuilt Pict 34, whatsoever....
I've had twin webber 34 ict's on my beetle 1.6 for years but now i'm using the car as my winter daily i've just gone back to stock pict 34 with big plastic air filter and all heater tubes fitted.. The car now starts and runs a lot smoother and quieter. Save yourself a lot of money and hassle and have a better drive by keeping the stock carb IMHO
Tell the missus you're going for twin carbs, then refit the old PICT (she'll never know). Then spend the money you've saved on drink and Lithuanian pole-dancers. Sorted
I think the standard carb is ok, may be worth aralditing in a coin and giving it a clean. I like my weber progressive but it has taken some fettling with making a good linkage.
Snotty that's a fab idea! But I do fancy a bit more oomph, I will be checking the internals of the carb and aralditing my penny on for a local club run next weekend but that's not a permanent fix for me. I won't do anything that can't be reversed so I will give it a go and see what happens Cheers all
A pair of ICTs might serve you well. Adding jetting, manifolds and linkage bumps the cost up, tho': best do your sums first.
I've been running a twin choke carb in my daily driver for 5 years now with no problems at all, it gives me a little extra pull away at the traffic lights and roundabouts compared to my dad and brothers bays running the original carbs
