Carb upgrade to twin carbs

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the crumpets, May 23, 2012.

  1. Hello All,

At the moment we are just going through the pros and cons of upgrading to twin carbs.

We have a stock 1600 TP, with electronic ignition and a stock JK stainless steel tail pipe.

We are thinking of buying some twin webber/EMPI etc 34's (don't want to get into a debate of which ones are best at this point)

Do we have to get any other accessories to feel the benefits, the reason for the question at Vanjamboree i asked this question and i was told i should buy some 1:25 rockers and an aftermarket exhaust.

i understand about maybe getting the aftermarket exhaust because of starvation but is it a necessity or nice to have?

Do i really need the rockers to be uprated?

Or are there some other accessories i need to get if i get twin carbs

    Thanks in advance

You don't "need" the other things.

  3. have a look on euro carbs for the 34 icts

  4.
  5. I've got virtually the same setup as you with a pair of IDF40's.
'fPete Nice' did an excellent deal or me and got a good discount from eurocarbs which meant the fitting and setup by him was almost free.
    Very good job.

The result was it made the bus a lot easier to cruise at motorway speeds, no dropping down to third on that hill out of Bristol on the m4. Just made the bus so much more chill to drive really.

If you have a mechanical pump then you'll need a fuel regulator but I'd recommend going to an electric one (webcon do a nice one with built in filter and regulator. reason is if you leave your bus more than a couple of weeks the float bowls empty and you'll be winding your battery to get going. Lots of stuff on here about fitting pumps.

No issues with starting in the winter (no choke).

Do it, you wont regret it.

    Cheers

  6. You don't need them but the engine will run better with them.

  7. You'll need Go-Faster Stripes and Carlos Fandango Extra Wide Wheels...

But you don't need the other stuff...

  8. So then with my VW window stickers, go faster stripes and carlos fandango extra wide wheels will i hit the holy grail of 88MPH and go back to the future

  9. Cheers for all the replys and that is exactly why i posted the question, to get good "honest" answers and not higglety pigglety waffle that i got at the show

  12. my bugs got 34 ict s on it with a quite pack exhaust apart from that its standard the carbs aren’t set up that well just me guessing it really and its fine could be better if it was set up right but hay ho

  13. I have twin empi on my van( was there when I bought it) I don't think there is an electric fuel pump! That would explain why I have to turn her over for about 2 mins to start the engine! Thanks for the heads up!!

I've got twin solex on my otherwise stock 1600. I do have to turn it over a few times to get fuel through but no real issue.

  15. We have twin 34 ICT's on our bus with an electric rotary pump, runs sweet and as good as it gets for fuel consumption on a bus. Got em from eurocarb, but paid for the better quality throttle linkage and well worth it.

  16. Even a basic twin carb setup (like ICTs) will serve you well, as the standard manifold is quite restrictive.

You don't need fancy rockers and stuff. Might be worth fitting a 4-into-1 exhaust, tho'

Don't forget you'll need manifolds and a linkage (centre-pull's better IMHO), which adds to the cost. The stock mechanical fuel pump should be fine.
