Carb tuning/dodgy choke maybe

  1. Seem to have an issue today with the running on the 1600tp with pict 34 carb.

It starts fine, ticks over well but soon as you touch the throttle it splutters and wants to die, undrivable.

    Any ideas???

Also, if I adjust anything, I haven't yet, how do I know the mixture is correct???

    Thanks peeps

I wouldn't adjust the carb, they don't suddenly go out of adjustment.
    Sounds like points to me.

  3. Hmmm didnt think of that.

Would the choke stuck on do it, can a choke get stuck on ???

Yes if the wire comes off or it breaks.
You are describing weak spark though, or at a pinch (pretty rare) a split accelerator pump diaphram in the carb.
    I'd check the electricals first.

  5. Think I will have to get my mate to check it, I have checked all wires, tightened the spade ends, nothing looks out of place from my limited knowledge.

    Thanks dude

  6. If the electic choke unit dies yes the choke can get stuck on but it's easy enough to check. Lift off the air cleaner. Is the top flap in a vertical position or partially closed? It's not going to be that though. It would only die of a stuck choke after the engine has been running for some time.

  7. My progressive Weber was like that. A good clean of the carb and a replacement accelerator pump diaphragm cured a lot of the spluttering when trying to accelerate. Has the 34 got an inlet filter? That could be blocked, or blocked in line filter or weak fuel pump delivery.

  8. Sounds identical to the problem I had. Since I replaced the choke it runs fine. For 17 quid for a new one it's worth a punt.

  9. Its rebuilt carb, all was working fine, just yesterday this issue started, I reckon its the choke.

One other thing - when It was running fine, if I revved it it would settle down to say (guessing) 1200rpm then over about 30seconds to a minute it would drop again to normal tick over.

    Is that right.

  10. what Zed said, i had a problem with the accelerator pump diaphram splitting. this pumps a shot of extra fuel into the carb as the throttle opens, could cause that problem if this is not working properly or the adjustable cam was not tightened up after rebuild it might have moved.
it you take the air filter off and hold the choke open when you open the throttle you should see a squirt of fuel shoot out.

  11. Been playing around with the bus the last 2 days, the choke is duff, not coming off. I have disconnect it and it will now run and drive.

Also I have noticed it ticks over to fast, probably about 1100rpm, this is because when the throttle is released it catches on that metal stepped thing, which is part of the choke I think ??? (Im learning slowly hahaha)
    That loose also.
I have bought a new choke, I have a VW specialist turning up on Thursday to check, fit and tune the carb, let me know if anything else is duff.

    Thanks
