Carb Tuning (again) Fuel Filter questions

  1. This is now really doing my head, not loosing the love just getting frustrated with my inadequences again.

Got the timing sorted, after putting a 009 electronic ignition distributor from accuspark. For a while it was running smoothly, then from advice on here was told to refurb and tune the carb.

Thought i had sorted the carb tuning, went out on a good run yesterday. As the driver i thought i could feel it ever so slightly spluttering every now and again. Then when i went up a long hill i made it all the way in forth, before the service etc i had to make it in third, at the top it gave a big cough/splutter and then carried on ok.

i used a remote digital tacho to get the idle setting, however it is not that accurate (cheap) and has a variation of 50-100 rpm at any one time. Then adjusted the air intake, it said to reduce the rpm by 20-30 and then adjust the idle again to 850 - 900. It still slightly splutters when out on the road, not when i am playing around with the throttle/revs on the drive.

Is it such a black art or am i missing something (i used the carb tune from KYBA 5 and rob and daves aircooled pages) Any help would be appreciated. I have checked for air leaks, leads, plugs etc.

When i started it a minute ago, the rpm was down to 700 then kept increasing until just above 900 rpm. Then stayed there when warm, again is this normal or have i had a brain melt down and not realised it does this naturally
    (timing hypercondriact)

One thing that did confuse me, when i looked into the engine bay there was a small bubble appear every 8-10 secs in the fuel filter. is this normal or have i answered my own question and need to sort that bubble out on the fuel filter.

God i know i have gone on a bit but i am typing as i am talking.

  2. Hello

I am no expert but am sure one of them will come along soon enough! (snotty, Zed, Joker etc etc)

What condition are your fuel hoses in? Sounds as if there could be a clamp thats loose or its letting in air maybe?
it might also be due to fuel vapourisation due to fuel getting too hot?

Anyhow I am no expert so dont take my advice

    :)

  3. 99 % of your problems will be the 009 dizzy ...Hate the things especially the cheap Marmitee you buy these days .

  4. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

When you're adjusting, you're adjusting for idle engine speed not driving, so if it's spluttering while driving normally (on the main jet), it's not carb adjustment.

  5. Did you time the engine with the dizzy at full advance?

  6. hi, as with all tech posts it really helps if you say what engine / carb set up you have
why was the 009 fitted? when you say you have sorted the carb tuning, what did you do?
have the emissions been checked since the overhaul? do you know if its lean? this will make it splutter / backfire

  7. Hello again,

Was frustrated when i sent the original post so fired it straight from the hip and sent.

To answer a few of the questions so you may help me further.

Fuel hoses and clamps are in good nick they are only a year old and had no problems with them before, i also checked all fittings while i was doing the service etc.

Did you time the engine with the dizzy at full advance?

Hello Paradox mate, yes i timeed the engine at full advance i.e. 46mm to the right of TDC notch, like i said on the other thread when it idles 7.5 deg BTDC notch is just to the left of split in crankcase.

99 % of your problems will be the 009 dizzy ...Hate the things especially the cheap marmite you buy these days .

I must be one of the lucky ones i have never had any trouble with the 009 dizzies. I put this unit in as a complete dizzy/electronic ignition from accuspark from recomendations on TLB

It is a 1600 TP stock engine (code AD). Answer for dizzie as before. The emissions have not been checked, i did all the work myself after help form here, KYBA and the tinterweb. How do i check emissions and what with?
Do not know if it is lean how can i tell, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Zed have you got any idea at all what it could be then

    Thanks in advance
