Carb fuel line connector too big

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by stumpy77, Mar 6, 2014.

  1. I am making a start changing out my fuel lines well the ones I can get at. I've hit a brick wall with the pipe from the pump to the carb.I have purchased the 5.6mm r9 pipe as suggested but it won't fit over the brass fuel connector on the carb.I'm guessing its 8mm.can these be swapped out if so how? Or will I need a brass 8mm to 6mm reducer and get the relevant pipe. Ideally I don't really want to add further connections in the engine bay.

Finally anybody any tips how to get the 5.6mm pipe over the breather pipework.I attempted the hidden one above leisure battery,it came off easy enough but I can only get it on one pipe and that's about 10mm at best.

    Thanks

  2. Get a smaller banjo on the carb. Use Vaseline for the hose

  5. If you can swap the fuel inlet on the carb, do that, or use a brass or nylon reducer. 5.6mm is for a standard Solex. Don't force the hose over a bigger carb connector, or it'll crack and fail eventually. Don't use Vaseline, as it attacks rubber. Important to change the hose under the van as well.

The breather pipes should be 7mm(?) hose, not 5.6mm. You only need short lengths.

  6. Bugger just got the breather pipe done with vaseline aswell above the leisure battery. It will have to stay for now until I get 7mm? (I followed the how to on here and it suggested 5.6 all round) Does it attack rubber quickly?

    Thanks Guys

  7. Just had quick look around it would seem the fuel pipe sizes are 5.6 mm then 7.6mm then 9.5mm. Should I go for the 7.6mm to cover breather pipes and pipe to carb (adaptor 6mm to 8mm) Im not so confident with messing with the carb other than it being a Weber I dont know which type it iso_O

  8. Breathers should be fine, as they only handle fumes, rather than fuel flow. I found 7mm stayed on with a push fit.

I'd stick to the right diameters (with a reducer) for the fuel pipe to the carb.

  9. Its a plan cheers

  10. Fill a cup with boiling water and dip the end of hose in for a few seconds, pipe will slide on a treat.

It's important to have the correct size hose for your fittings, too stretched and as Snotty says it'll fail premeturely, too large and no matter how tight the clamp it'll still be loose and the clamp will cause it to fail premeturely as well. 1/4" is not good.

I'll stick my neck out here. R9 is designed for 10% ethonal which isn't here yet. Yes I do fit it for all customers but I'd be quite happy with R7 on my own bus.

  13. Cheers for that zed. I've now ordered both 5.6" and 7.6" to be safe. I can always keep some pipe as spare lol
