Car for kids

  1. Has anybody got any experience, knowledge, of the best car to get for my son to drive when he is 18. H will have passed his test for about a month (I hope!) I think it is gonna be cheaper to buy or lease a modern car as the insurance is cheaper, rather than buy an old banger! Any thoughts anyone?

If they qualify for the free insurance interest free credit etc for 3 years it looks to be cheaper to go new rather than used, although you usually require a large deposit or a balloon payment at the end of the term.

  3. We used co-op young drivers ins for our son, knocked about £3500 of the insurance. Also because they fit a tracker and monitor your driving style if you dive safely then the price comes down even more. Saves another £300 over the life of the policy.

  4. Thanks any idea how I find out if he qualifies for the free insurance ?

  5. Thanks So how much was the policy for him with black box?

  6. Started of at £1000 but with the rebates ended up at about £700, although this was on a 3 year old Mini Cooper.

The other good thing about the co-op system is that you are given a link to a web site that shows how the car has been driven such as speed, cornering, braking, acceleration and when it was driven.

We also got some classic car quotes at around the £1000 mark for a mgb gt and £700 for an old beetle, both those quotes were for classic car insurance with not black box.

  7. We were offered free insurance when looking on a Citroen C1 for our daughter. I wouldn't do that to my kids, same as I don't want anyone looking at / judging my driving. Just bought a new Skoda Fabia 1.2 petrol, VAT equivalent discount at the moment, insurance not too bad for a 19 year old either.
