'Cos it's very tactile, mebbe? Let's not complain...I like the idea of cars being sculpted . They all look the same cos they all have to comply with the same regs.
they make them out of clay as its cheaper to get a full size model this way, they can have two differnt shapes on each side and se what they look like and fine tune the design before wrapping the clay. you can only see so much with cad before it needs to bee seen by the human eye in the flesh under normal lighting, have seen it a work, great process
Yes they do, I have a fiend that does it for Aston Martin. It's a highly skilled job and very well paid, if they're brave enough to go freelance and will to move to Germany they can earn £70k per year or more.
All cars ( same size/class) should be the same shape if you think about it. Once you've got the optimum aerodynamic shape for size of vehicle then should not all manufactures being use the same shape. But everyone wants to be different.
Come down to Coventry university and see us teach automotive design students how to do it.Its a different type of clay than pottery clay as it hardends as it cools (its applied warm ).Its then shaped using tools until the design team is happy,if its a show car its sprayed as you would a normal car.Of it a production car then it will be 3d scanned to provide digital data for tooling.
