Car Boot

  1. Hi Folks. Going to be doing a car boot sale in Ascot in a couple weeks to help with decluttering the flat and raise some much needed cash. Those who have been/done one before, what tends to sell well? Is there anything I should prepare/consider before going? Not done one before, so any words of wisdom would be much appreciated!

  2. Be prepared for the vultures, sorry i mean prospective customers to desend as soon as you pull up and start helping you unload, oh and take plenty of change :)

  3. I don't know about household tat, but burgers and ice cream seem to sell well. There's always a mahoosive queue.

  4. ^^^ That
people try and catch you unaware as you try and set up so you sell for less than you meant to. most of the time these are the "pro's" that car boot every week, they try to get your best stuff cheap and then sell it themselves.
last one i did the vultures soon buggered off when i told them everything was £50 each :)
try and pre price everything you want more than a few quid for so get some tags from staples or similar
also remember if your stuff is too dear you have to take it all home with you

Price everything before you leave home, as an amateur you are considered easy prey for the professionals & the dealers.
As has been said take plenty of change & be prepared to haggle

  7. Yup, pre price as much as you can, even if its just putting things in a box mark '50p each' etc. If some bits aren't selling halfway through the morning and you really don't want to take em home, take the prices off and accept something lower.

Did one last year and took the van - the amount of offers I have for it! Nothing decent though. All the kids remembered it and kept asking their mums to go back to the 'camper stall' - we had a ton of kids toys we were selling that ours had grown out of.:) having the camper was great to stand out in a sea of Vauxhalls and Fords

  9. A mate does them as he does house clearances, He has more than had enough by the end of the day, everyone wanting something for nothing, he had a sliver plated make up mirror (the type with the handle) up for £5, a little Indian woman came up and said 50p? He just smashed it and said ok lol

  10. I like the very occasional rummage through a car boot sale - favourite game is where like those antiques hunt shows in tv you set a budget and in teams ( helps if you go with other people here ) you have to buy the most abhorrent piece of chintz in the sale. The winner doesn't get a prize..

My favourite one is a dolphin shaped ceramic loo brush holder. Still got it. (Under a pile waiting to up to the tip in the garden )

  12. The best thing you can do is park on your plot and walk away for 10 to 15 mins, if you unpack as soon as you pull up you will get people in your car taking stuff out, let the Mob move on then unpack

You'll sell all the nice things and get left with all the junk, so plan a trip to the tip on the way home.
I've done a couple and come away with £200 each time. Not bad for a day's work and get shot of your rubbish.
As for chav central, I suppose that depends where you live. ;)

  14. Take plenty of plastic bags, change, sandwiches, drinks and somewhere safe to put your money. Watch out for those with the big shoulder bags, holdalls and in pairs they are the traders or thieves, had loads 0f stuff pinched when one keeps you talking and the other filling the holdall at the other end. Take some high wind breaks and put them up first, from your boot to your table to stop gannets getting in your boot before you have unloaded. Don't do a boot sale on your own. Have done 3 but never again. Good luck and hope you make a pile of dosh.

  15. Watch out at any boot for thieves , had a couple of things swiped in the past ....no matter what boot you are selling at :)

  18. just be aware that if your taking your bus , they will gawk n watch out for the dimwit carrying a rake n dragging it down the side of your bus as he races for his next bargain , id never do one again in my bus , they will all think your minted n nick your badges etc  still im sure you can deal with them ok , have a good one n dont spend it all on burgers n icecreams:D:thumbsup:

  19. did one couple of years ago, never again I would rather Chuck it away, I had a woman who wanted things for nearly nothing, she said she was buying for charity, eh buying for charity, like others said the vultures helping you unload, never again

  20. I do one once every two years or so. Always enjoy it. You do get to see how little money some people have and also how much just buying something for 10p can mean to kids that don't get a lot.
