Captain Tom Moore

  1. I like the record he's done with Michael Ball, hope it raises even more cash. Good that captain Tom is being looked after at home with family. We had a lovely old chap as a neighbour a few years back in his 90's and a survivor of WW2 tanks in the North African desert against Rommel. Bert was a quiet resilient man independent always well turned out and doing things for others and cheerful and always had a smile.

So you question is how much money would a person raise in reaction to an emergency, raise were there to be no emergency.

I’ll have a run at not a lot.

I agree ‘austerity’ has been a disaster.....but many many charities are big businesses run by extremely well paid executives quite prepared to brow beat people in to donation....look at the ones pushing ‘lotteries’ when gambling is so serious there are charities to counter it, or now targeting ‘gifts’ from older peoples wills.

Captain Tom is different gravy....my hope is whoever takes the money and distributes it doesn’t profit.

Giving it to any of the big charities means 35% + goes to execs on healthy six figure pay packets, and fuels incentive driven 3rd parties that are given bonuses and targets to hit and next to no regulations on how they go about it.

I give only to local causes, Medicines Sans Frontiers and one offs like Captain Tom.

My biggest hope from all of this is we recognise who matters in our Society.

Hedge fund managers and Angel Investors earn millions and lauded as important have been utterly useless, as have bankers, accountants, solicitors etc.

AI will redress this anyway, maybe we’ll get a new balance to society too.

  5. As usual its ordinary folks who stump up the cash in times of need. We look after our own and don't expect help from the rich.

    Sorry , that’s b****cks.

Plenty of Rich people give money to causes, and the majority are taxed accordingly throughout their lives.

If you want to fix imbalances in our society, stop buying from Amazon etc.

I’ve no idea what proportion of Captain Tom’s donations came from rich people and what came from poor people. I imagine it’s a real mix.

  11. Lets hope that the rich have made donations too.

  12. Just think on, there is a whole multitude out there that would consider us lot rich what with our vintage recreational vehicles that are garaged on semidetached properties. There's allus someone worse off than thisell, and usually it's a lot of folk.

  17. Posh or poor donations. it's over 20mil.
To put that into prospective the leader of the free world is trying start a civil war. An old man who went to war in a tank is trying to save lives by pottering up and down his patio.

  19. Captain Tom has to be admired, he is old and frail but his spirit is strong. Well done I say for making an effort, meanwhile how many of us are actually doing anything to help the cause and help others. Most folks round here are treating the lockdown as a holiday and apart from catching up on jobs in their own cocoons, they are doing nothing to help others. We hear about the good folks who are volunteering and making much needed items for the NHS, well done to them, they could have sat at home doing stuff for themselves or just swanning around.

Captain Tom does remind me of my old grandad who lived to a ripe old age and he was a Boer War and WW1 survivor. His old body wore out but his spirit was strong and he was an inspiration to me as a teenager.
