Can someone explain this timing slippage?!

  1. Do you have an air leak thats temperature dependant?

  2. Well, it's the original dizzy so it could be screwed. I haven't taken it apart yet to be honest. Kind of only want to do that if I know it's the actual problem, and the timing is retarding, as if the drive shaft is slipping on the cog.

God I wish it would just work.

  3. ... On my way back from Devon the VW garage I called into checked for leaks (carb cleaner) after I had been driving for 30 mins at 26 BTDC and the engine was roasting. He found nothing. I was watching him.

Fun this! But thanks for all the suggestions!

  4. Ive just picked up some more of these for us to clutch at

Im sorry dude im not much help as its vw fuel injection and ive never played with that system
Keep the faith though theres enough clever people on her that it will get sorted eventually
Have you had a search through the samba for your faults?

  5. ... Oh, I think I've managed to annoy most of the clever people on The Samba with my incessant questions!

    Thanks though!

  6. it doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the timing at all....it sounds fuel related....rough/erratic idle sounds like fuel/air mixture or delivery or uneven compression from errant valve clearances..if you've pegged the static timing around abouts....one or two degrees either way won't make a huge difference at idle when the engine's cold.....remember it was only running for half an hour standing still, so it wasn't even warm

or you may have a big air leak!

Classic example back in they day was the guy who had a race-tuned 1380 Mini...his timing would fluctuate when the engine warmed up....everything was bang-on....timing, mixture, new coil, leads points etc...he struggled for ages to pin point the problem, until he re fitted his old contact points....the lobe on the new contacts was expanding as it heated up, sending his timing out...when he took the dizzy cap off, the lobe had cooled sufficiently to return the gap to normal....try diagnosing that!

I had an issues a while back....turned out three (not one) but three new bosch spark plugs breaking down when hot....
