  1. hey guys, have heard of a few people with '73 bays who dont have to pay road tax, and i have a '73 bay... so i was wondering how that works?

any help with this would be awesome!! if someone helps me get free tax, there may well be a VW based reward on the cards... :)

when is the date of registration (on the log book)?

  3. If you can prove it was manufactured pre 73 (not registered) check your vin number. Get written comformation from VW HQ Peterborough, take this with your log book to your local DVLA office and they will change it to historic tax class. Did this with my old gt beetle.

  4. yup, tax exemption is only if it was manufactured before 1st january 1973. my bug was registered on the 1/1/73 and it took me ages to get them to agree that it therefore HAD to have been manufactured before. d'oh.

  5. ah dammit, mine was first registered on 22/06/73, according to the V5. so i guess thats that plan well and truly scuppered :(

thanks for the help though people :)

Not neccessarily. It might have sat at a dealers before being registered.
You'd think the first chassis number off the line on 1/1/73 would be a commonly known thing in the camper world? If we knew that it would be simple.

  7. yup, my bus was registered in late march 1973 but was manufactured in october.

  8. Not necessarily - my bus was registered around the same time as yours but was manufactured 18/1/73 - so it might be worth a try (didn't work for me though :( )

  9. I got its birth certificate from Germany. Was no use though as built in 73 :-(

  10. AS folk have said above its about manufacture and not registration. Mines a late 72 reg in 73 also

  11. well thats good to know! i will have to look into that, thanks guys!

how would i go about getting mine's birth certificate mate? would be a nice thing to have, especially as i didnt really get any paperwork with mine :(

  12. yep in total agreement witht hese threads. the log book will say date of reg. you need the date it rolled out of the factory. could still be possible to be tax free. although 3-4 months seems to be the max turn around time from manufacturer to registration.

  13. I ordered it from here. You will need google translate as half the form is in german, worked out about £40

If you post up the info from your M plate, that should give a close enough match to the date of manufacture..if it does prove to be pre-73, you'll then need the birth certificate as proof for the dvla...good luck!

A bit of digging comes up with this... the last 6 are serial number, so you need to be earlier assuming yours starts with 2*3

"The following vehicles were made before the end of Dec 1972, and qualify for historic vehicle class with free road tax (at the moment!) :-
Buses up to 2*32102496 (where * is a single digit representing the model type)."

It's on the log book Ken. You're a 73/L reg so you never know, but there aren't too many buses left out there paying tax when they needn't be...

  19. my number starts with 2*321..... does that mean mine could be tax -free-able?? or is it the whole number numerically has to be under that?
