Can’t select third gear

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Crispy, Oct 6, 2019.

  1. Can anyone help with the latest problem on my bus,it’s a RHD ‘77,has an empi gear shifter. Its been driving fine but all of a sudden on a recent journey it no longer lets me select third gear.tried double dipping the clutch but won’t have it. I adjusted the shifter base plate which felt like it was going into third while parked but when taken for a drive, the problem is still there. I think I need to jack it up and take a look underneath, not sure exactly what at though.Would be grateful for any advise.cheers.

  2. Worth winding in the clutch wingnut 2 or 3 turns , just to eliminate the possibility of poor adjustment / cable on it's way out ...

  3. Thanks il give that a try,at the beginning of the year I had trouble with reverse and someone did this to the clutch cable which worked. I should have thought of that first

  4. When you adjusted the base plate was it in neutral? if so undo it again pop it in 2nd then re-tighten. Also does it go in 3rd with engine off?
edit: Also if you are getting under the bus check the front bush & the bushes in the linkage coupling at the gearbox end, where it joins the gbox selector

  5. It seems to be going in to third with engine off but not when driving

  6. Maybe clutch then but worth checking the bushes anyway, also there is a collar about 2 thirds back that connects the linkage tube. It has a grub screw & is also worth checking

  7. Just noticed the middle one,the grub screw on the coupler at the gearbox end was not particularly tight either

  12. don’t panic!I’m back, thank you all for the input, the test drive went great.third gear is fully functional once again, not sure what did it,probably a combination of trying to tighten the clutch cable,re-adjusting the shifter plate and tightening that loose grub screw....hallelujah the gears are back

Loose grub screw 90% likely. If it is an OG screw then there will be a hole drilled across the head through which the connoisseur may insert a piece of wire from the assembly securing the top of a bottle of Bolly and which ensures that said screw remains done up until the wire rots off.

  14. My gearstick has developed the dreaded slop. And going down from 3rd to 2nd is hit and miss. The front rod bush is worn out allowing much up and down rod movement and the coupler at the gearbox end is sloppy. So new bush and coupler needed, which are the best quality ones and where do I get them please.

The gearstick itself looks fine with ball and pin well greased and not showing any wear. The front rod slot where the pin fits in looks ok, its not tight, but I don't know how tight a fit it should be. The adjuster plate is not worn and is a good one with the wings on the sides.

  15. Front bush - any of the usual suspects but I have one of these couplers on with a hurst type gear stick, just like driving a regular car.....

Empi gear lever, renew all the bushings and couplings. Forget about it.

  17. Best wire to use is the sheaving wire on armed cable

  18. Scream it in second till you hear the pistons hitting the valves, then pop it into fourth, no need to thank me.

And when’s it’s done that, Re gap the valve clearances through the sump plug.

  20. Underneath my van today. All went well until I removed the old donut shaped front bush, which had a lot of play up and down and side to side in its mounting plate. The plate itself looks pretty new and probably welded in when the van was restored 6 years ago. But the hole in the plate seems slightly too big to get a tight fit on the bush.

The old bush came out all too easily and its not split or cracked, just loose in the mounting.

The new bush went in easily but there is a lot of movement in the groove, so no better than the old one.

    Anyone else had this problem.
