Calling engine experts..type 4 t25 engine into a bay

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Nov 27, 2018.

  1. Hi all.
Firstly, I am not an engine expert but a reasonably competent diy'er!
Been looking at a 2056cc type 4 engine that has been built for a type 25 and is turnkey with type 25 tinware.
Would there be much work involved in fitting it into my 71 crossover which currently has a 1700 type 4 engine in it with a standard do code gearbox.
What would be involved other than a straightforward engine swap.
    Tnx.

  2. The engine is a straight swap in a sense. I imagine unless your current heat exchangers are square port you will be better off fitting the T25 alternator fan blower and exhaust system.

You will need to make small mods to the body work where the alternator fan sits, but it is fairly simple. The advantages of the T25 fan blower is much more powerful heating.

I used the T25 tin and cut it using the Bay window tins as templates.

Or you could fit the fan shroud and alternator and all of the tin from your 1700 to the 2056cc, the engine fan itself is the same. The T25 heads are square port as Patrick mentioned and your oval port 1700 heat exchangers won’t fit so you’d need to be inventive with the T25 heat exchangers, or buy 1979 T2 square port ones.

If you can get the T25 fan shroud to fit in the T2 it is more efficient at cooling the engine but whether the mods to the body work and tin are simple depends on your skill level. I’d use the 1700 fan shroud, alternator and tin.

  4. Interesting reading, why is the type 25 fan housing better than the type 2 bay window version?

Would it be sensible to try to shoe horn a t25 alternator and fan into a type 2 for improved heating as a general theme?

The T25 fan housing allegedly distributes the air more evenly between the left and right cylinders, the T2 airflow is biased towards the right side of the engine, cylinders 1 and 2.

I haven’t looked at a T25 alternator but the cooling air for the T2 alternator is bled out of the engine fan shroud and recycled. I expect the T25 is the same and I don’t see how it could improve the heating, the engine fan and the volume of air is the same, or very similar.

  6. The T25 Shroud only supplies air to the engine, hence why the alternator exclusively feeds the heat exchangers.

Because all the air goes to the engine you get about 10 - 15% more cooling volume. The alternator fan is a powerful little beast and really pushes a satisfying amount of air, so you can actually rely on the stock heating to keep you warm.

I'll take some pictures of my hack and smash job when the rain stops.

  7. Thanx guys..how high up do you have to have the van in the air to swap the type 4 engine out?
Mine is a crossover so the rear valance isn't removable, and I only have about 5 inches between the top of my van and the garage roof, with the bus sat on the wheels...Will I do it?

I took my engine out a few days ago, the bottom of the valance to the ground is 26” and the engine is on a 3½” platform. With the tow bar removed and the engine on the ground it would probably come out with the bus 6” lower.

And I know the engine is the wrong way around.:)

Interesting. I pulled a pic off of TheSamba, it looks like the T25 alternator cooling air is pulled out of the fan shroud the same as a T2 (or maybe not?), and there is a squirrel cage fan attached to the alternator with some trunking over the engine fan for the heat exchangers. I guess VW realised T25 engine cooling was marginal and saved some air from the fan shroud for the cylinders that would otherwise go into the heat exchangers.

It must be tight in the T2 and changing the fan/alternator belt a bit of a challenge. T25 alternator.jpg

  11. Changing the fan belt is a bit of a faff as the fan has to come off first, but can easily be done in 15 mins though and yes it was a tight fit. The chassis rails do not get messed with, but the thin metal had to be cut back and welded back. If only I could do something with all the extra space you gain above the engine.

Make a tray for the spare wheel, if you carry one.

  13. How did I not think of this one. I hate spares on the front and takes up sleeping space inside. This also will allow me to weld my spare wheel dip flat, so I have more room for leisure batteries. Genius idea!

  14. Fascinating..... I have an upright type 4 and was thinking of going back to pancake do I can run efi without twin throttle bodies.

Sticking the better fan on the alternator in my prototype bay may be a challenge then...

The T2 heater fan just helps the airflow when the engine is idling but if a much larger fan with a variable speed motor were used the outlets from the engine fan shroud to the heat exchangers could be blocked off. You’d gain the extra engine cooling without the cumbersome fan on the end of the alternator and the motor driven fan could be mounted wherever there is space for it.

  16. Bit confused picture is a type 1 motor & you refer to an upright type 4 ?

It’s a type 4 engine with an upright cooling conversion.

Your comments on the motor driven fan were my plan a to be honest so I totally agree.

I don’t have heater boxes just now, that’s part of the plan for winter.

Just gotta decide whether to go back to stock cooling or keep my Cali conversion. Desperately need the thermostat though as in this weather it runs very cool. Pancake means easy efi which I prefer over the carbs.

  19. Did you manage to get the engine grub? I have had an eye on it myself but the listing has ended early. I presume someone made a decent offer, I know there were 60 watching it when I dropped a bid on it earlier this week.
    Proper bit of kit.

I didn’t see it, what made it a proper bit of kit?
