Cabin Bunk Install

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Perez_In_Wales, May 17, 2020.

  1. Hi everyone... I'd appreciate a bit of advice. I just bought a cabin bunk from JustKampers and was wondering if anyone had fitted one.

My concerns are first that the fitting instructions say to measure 175mm up from the dash for the location to drill the lower hole, however, the accompanying picture indicates the hole being drilled at just under 100mm. Which is right? Second, they say to come out 10mm from the seam however I can't see how I'd be able to fit the bunk in after install as the window seal will be in the way! Below is a link to the fitting instructions...

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

  3. Thanks! It should be simple but because I'm drilling holes, I wanted to check first!

  4. I’m not finding anything simple Useless instructions, materials not precise etc. Yeah, when it comes to cutting or drilling I get OCD.

  5. I'd ask JK to clarify as it's their instructions, but your risk

  6. I would trial fit it to determine the bracket position than rely on JKs instructions/advice!

Looks like a load of pants to me. It's a westy copy but the westy relies on the canvas being taught to keep the poles in the brackets. How it's fitted on the instructions photo it would fall out of the brackets if you touched it.
It had to be above the steering wheel and seat backs with headrests removed and taught.
High back seats? - forget it.

  8. I’ve got the NLA Vw version of this, can grab some shots for you. The material is seriously taught when you fit it into the brackets

  9. Thanks for the feedback people! Would definitely be interested in some pics Dr A if that isn't too much trouble..

    Thanks

  10. We have the NLA version too. Struggling to open the JK file but hopefully these picks will help.

Your right in thinking the brackets need to be as far from the window rubber as possible. I struggled each time I fitted it and scratched the paint off the pilar. Hence the tape around the ends of the bars.

If the brackets are similar they need to be at an angle so when you put weight on the hammock there is no risk of the bars sliding out.

Obviously need to be set at a height to avoid the seats and steering wheel but as low as possible to give maximum headroom.

Let me know if you need other pics.

  11. My Westy has brackets fitted - not sure if they are original or not - and had thought of getting a non original bunk for the dog to sleep in!

  12. Thanks Lila for the pics! Interesting that you've taped the ends up. Was that to do with covering sharp bits on the end of the tubing?

  13. The ends used to scratch the paint on the pillar so the tape was to try to prevent this.

Our little one is now too big to sleep in the bunk but she used to enjoy having her own space.

  15. And set up... the more you use it the slacker it gets so don’t be afraid of a tight start.

  16. Thanks!! Greatly appreciated! I decided the picture was wrong and to go 175mm as per the written instructions. If I’d done 100mm I probably wouldn’t have got the clearance.

We are now bedding down for the night in our first camper experience of 2020!

  17. I should add that whilst we did sleep in the camper last night, it was parked on the drive way! HAHAHA!
